Screen Resolution changing?
« on: June 29, 2011, 01:15:53 PM »
1)   I am overjoyed because my wireless worked 'out of the box' with 2011.6 Live.   I was waiting for a new kernel and 2.6.38.8 did the trick.  Thank you, thank you.   I have a new Lenovo, with a Realtek RTL8111/8168 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller driver r8169  and  Card-2    Realtek TRL8188CE  802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter driver rtl8192ce.   THANK YOU.

Now I want to permanently install PCLinux when the 64 bit version is released.

2)  My problem.  The LIVE PCLinuxOS  KDE  2011.6  set up my laptop resolution,  screen  15.6" , at  800 x 600.    I want something less large.   How do I change the resolution on this laptop?
When I get this issue resolved, I will be installing PCLinux.     I will even learn KDE, though I this point I prefer Gnome.

the resolution can be changed in kde control center(configure your desktop)/hardware/display and monitor/size and orientation

it is not normal that your monitor is set to that lower resolution, this leads me to believe that the video driver selected is not the proper one

after you install the system check in pclinux control center/hardware/setup the graphical server the options for monitor(the right resolution) and the video driver

this depends on what video card you have on that laptop

is it possible to select video cards, change resolutions, using the Live CD, so that I knew with some certainty that the changes can be done after installation?    I would like to be sure that I can set the right driver  (before I commit to installing).     Thanks.

supposedly yes but first you should know what hardware you have and you really need a driver or just change resolution by hand

the installation is a simple process, you can easily discover all that in 10 minutes

I tried to change the resolution with the Live disk.    I checked my video card:
Second Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller        Compatible VGA Controller

When I go to kde control center (configure your desktop)/hardware/display and monitor/size and orientation   it shows the resolution as  800 x 600 and the only other option is  'Disabled'

PClinux control center/hardware/setup shows all of the resolutions, I chose   1366 x 768   but it did not take effect

I do not know what to do next.     Thank you in advance

compatible vga controller means that system has no idea what video card you have and loaded basic driver using lowest not harmful resolution for unknown monitor and video card

what video card do you have?

On the printed description of the computer,  ThinkPad E520     System graphics  -  Intel HD Graphics

Windows 7 Home Premium 64  is installed.   Do I need to secure more information beyond     Intel  HD Graphics?

This is a quote from the very recent ZDnet review (on Distrowatch under Reviews) of PCLinuxOS  2011.6

General: For reasons that I don't really understand, the PCLinuxOS installer still tries to create an xorg.conf file. For reasons that I do understand at least a bit, it consistently gets the screen resolution wrong on many of my systems, especially netbooks, so they come up looking strange, with low resolution or only part of the screen used. No big deal, just log in the first time and then delete or rename the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Reboot, or just restart the X display server, and you have a 99% chance of X getting everything right on its own.

Could this be my problem and my solution?

not sure, the problem is that the system doesn't detect the video card properly

yes, you can follow those steps

the problem is caused by the xorg update, Texstar couldn't wait any longer(we kept using a very old xorg for a long time)

xorg recent versions are problematic  :(

Thank you for the help.   I can't try the steps in the review because I am, at this time, using the LIVE disk.   At least, that is what I think that I can't do because there are not files in
etc/X11/xorg.conf       Besides I am waiting for the 64 bit version before installing.    Any other ideas, for the Live disk test, would be appreciated.

in livecd you can reconfigure video card but the changes can be seen only after reboot and that will recreate a new xorg.conf

well, i'm waiting for the 64 bit version too

what i don't understand is why your system can't detect the video card, the 2011.6 here detects this gma3150 without a single problem

Right now it kinda seems like the auto detect is not perfect in resolution detection. But the right resolution is usually an easy setting, and a reboot away. (Or so it seems to me)

But that is the problem with just a live Distro. You can lose your settings after the reboot since nothing is wrote to disk. If you can get KDE showing, It usually just a quick config change to get the right resolution.

Actually, if you go to PCC (Configure Your Computer) > Hardware >> Configure Video Card and try to change the resolution and monitor values from the dropdown list WITHOUT changing the Graphic card, you do not have to reboot ... you can just Logout and Login using guest/guest for your username/password.

However, if there's no higher resolutions available, then you are really stuck.

Yes, when I go to PCC, Configure your Computer>Hardware>Configure Video Card    I am presented with a variety of resolutions including the one I want:  1366 x 768.
I can select that resolution, but as expected a 'Reboot' is necessary.    However, I cannot simply log and and log in again to accomplish the 'reboot'.    Am I correct in assuming, therefore,
that I cannot change the resolution as long as I am using a LIVE disk.   If this is the case, then I would like to know and will await the release of the 64 bit version before I install 2011.6.
Thank you for help in understanding what is the case with the live disk.
