rt2870 usb wireless problem
« on: June 27, 2011, 03:06:31 PM »
I have the newest kde pclinuxos installed along with debain,  debain sees wireless networks and can connect to them. pclinuxos  shows the card working using "rt2870usb" driver but when you click the refresh button in network manager, it does not find any networks. i need help please.

open the terminal and run these commands and give output if you are getting any

ifconfig

iwconfig

iw dev wlan0 scan

where "wlan0" is your wireless interface

I think you have to run the last one one root.

while on the terminal, type "su" then press enter and then enter root's password when prompted for a password and you will gain root privileges. From now on here, do the above everytime you are asked to log in as root.

Now that you are root, run below command and give your output

iw dev wlan0 scan | tail -n 10

No, i dont know what the problem is, The first two commands i asked you were to get a better sense of your system and its set up. The last one was to check if the interface can scan for wireless networks. I asked for this one just in case there was a problem with the GUI.

you have a "wlan0" interface. This means the system has seen your wireless interface and a driver is loaded to handle it.

Not seeing any wireless networks could mean either there are non around or the driver/card combination is failing to scan for wireless networks around you.

You said you can see and connect when you are on a different linux system and hence the problem is on pclinuxos. Unfortunately, this kind of problems are easily solved only by updating the kernel.

When you say you have the newest kde pclinuxos, are you talking about the one that was released today or?

Thats the old one, the newest one just came out today and you can get it and read what is new in it here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,93343.0.html

Install it and then come back if the problem is still there.

He is your dad and hence you know when is best to ask to get the answer you want  :D

Take your time, the forum will be here when you have the new system up and running but it doesnt work as expected. You can in the mean time hang around and familiarize yourself with the forum.

This is a very friendly forum and i think i can speak for all of us when i say "welcome to our little corner of the universe and we are all looking forward to seeing you around"
