Have updated to the  .38 kernel.  This is a laptop.  When i leave the front side wireless switch on and boot the compu eventually the mouse will not move anymore and i have to hard reboot.  If i turn off the front side wireless switch, the computer finished booting alright but then when i turn on the front side switch again, the led will no longer go to green and wireless is not recognized.

i once was able to boot into Safe Mode and started setting up wireless through MCC until i hit Connect -- when the compu froze again.

PCC says this is a Atheros AR5001x+ Wireless network adapter using the ath5k Module.

Unless there is something specific in the .38.x kernel I think I'd just drop back to the working one.

Thanks, menotu, however i'm afraid that one (.33) wasn't working either.

Have a beautiful morning!  :)

Here http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1481485 they say that the 2.6.38.8-32.fc15 kernel solves the problem.  However i can't see this kernel in Synaptic.

Should i go look for it elsewhere?

Is there any other solution to this challenge?

Have a great afternoon!  :)

The kernel developer would have to download, extract the patch then apply the patch to the pclinuxos kernel then rebuild all the kernels. Right now that guy is really busy building 64 bit packages so it will be a while before he will be able to fix your problem.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thanks for the reply, Texstar.  i'm going to try and go back to the .33 and see if it works.  i don't understand why it would just up and stop working...

Well, here's today's update...  As before i started w/wireless switch On and when the boot process finally stopped i switched the wireless switch Off and the boot process proceeded as usual.

Code: [Select]
[hector9@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.conf
install ide-controller /sbin/modprobe ide_generic; /bin/true
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd; /sbin/modprobe ohci_hcd; /bin/true

Code: [Select]
[hector9@localhost ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.preload
# /etc/modprobe.preload: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file should contain the names of kernel modules that are
# to be loaded at boot time, one per line.  Comments begin with
# a `#', and everything on the line after them are ignored.
# this file is for module-init-tools (kernel 2.5 and above) ONLY
# for old kernel use /etc/modules
fuse
raw1394
sbp2
ohci1394

nvram
tifm_7xx1
evdev

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost hector9]# cat /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-wlan0
DEVICE=wlan0
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
METRIC=35
MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=no
USERCTL=yes
RESOLV_MODS=no
WIRELESS_MODE=Managed
WIRELESS_ESSID=INFINITUM3493
WIRELESS_ENC_KEY=xxxxxxxxxxx
WIRELESS_ENC_MODE=open
IPV6INIT=no
IPV6TO4INIT=no
ACCOUNTING=yes
DHCP_CLIENT=dhclient
NEEDHOSTNAME=no
PEERDNS=yes
PEERYP=yes
PEERNTPD=no

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost hector9]# cat /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
blacklist ssb

blacklist ssb

The above commands are from the sticky in this forum for problem-solving wireless issues...

Have a great afternoon!  :)

P.D.  Might as well add this one, too...

Code: [Select]
[root@localhost hector9]# service -f network

Today we continued working on our friend's lappy.  We saw a thread http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,92344.0.html and decided to try inputting the WEP Key in ASKII instead of HEX.  Upon clicking Connect the lappy froze - as is its custom.  Of course turning off Wireless using the switch on the front of the compu frees the program but then i cannot turn wireless back on again until i hard reboot.  This time i was using OpenBox w/kernel .32

  i ran the following but got a lot of output and the system froze... "cat /var/log/syslog".

P.D.  Tried rebooting into lappy's normal OS, set up Wireless, Connect, freeze, turn off wireless with switch, ran "cat /var/log/syslog" and got too much output to post here.  If anyone is interested i could send a .txt file to you.

P. P. D.  Let's see if this works --  these are the last several lines...

Well, today is the day we got it fixed -- we are unsure how, but this is what we did...

We installed the two MADWifi packages from Synaptic that we found, rebooted.  Tried installing wifi through PCC using ndiswrapper and the athwi package that the program offered.  This, of course, didn't work.  In fact it worked so badly that the next time i rebooted and went to Network it wouldn't allow me to install using the already installed pci card, but instead only offered me Ndiswrapper and in fact i never got ndiswrapper fully setup bec. it alwasys said it was missing -- ndiswrapper!

Anyway, on one of the reboots i remembered to turn off wireless on the front of the computer and leave the lan connected.  This allowed me to boot into the desktop and then run PCC and to finally delete that adapter.  i also went into Synaptic and totally uninstalled the two MADWifi packages.  When i rebooted the next time and had wireless turned on, i was able to see that wireless was actually connected to one of my neighbor's wireless which doesn't require  any key!  So i unplugged the lan, just to make sure and sure enough, it stayed connected!

So, i decided to go the final mile and see if i could connect it to our router.  During the configuration it already had the password ??? so i just closed that window and finally hit ... Connect.  Which it very obediently did.  Victory!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.  i also got a lot of help and encouragement from LinuxQuestions.. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=4401595#post4401595

What went wrong originally, what really fixed this problem, i don't really know.  It remains a hidden mystery.

Have a great afternoon!  :)

PCC says this is a Atheros AR5001x+ Wireless network adapter using the ath5k Module.

FOR you: have you enabled the ndiswrapper-net5211 app via SYNAPTIC?

.......I did a LIVE CD of LXDE 2011.06 - {kernel---.38.8} like you on a ACER aspire, with built in atheros chip.

Could'nt/would'nt connect  --- I finagled with settings...connected 1ce, and dropped...(6 feet from router.) :-\

Works purrfect with 2010.12 on the HD, and also live cd of that version...with the earlier kernel : stated here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,93351.15.html

I tried to compare the differences with iwconfig....but had time and distance constraints...did'nt look in synaptic to see what was/was'nt loaded.

The Client is satisfied with 2010.12 for now - but I would sure like to know exactly what CHANGED with the new kernel.

The laptop screen was replaced with an exact replacement, but i "feel" thats not the problem... I'm still going to find out more - when I can.

If i remember correctly this is one of the drivers that Synaptic pulled in.  i was just looking for the ath5k or whatever it is in nDiswrapper.  i also have a friend and i just visited him and he now has problems keeping WiFi connected.  My other Sony Vaio laptop now has problems - but i updated it yesterday so we'll see if it's stable again.  Today i go back to friend's house and will update his lappy.

Who know what happened -- another one of those sunspots?  WiFi effects of global warming?

Have a great day!  :)

Thanks for the reply, Texstar.  i'm going to try and go back to the .33 and see if it works.  i don't understand why it would just up and stop working...

Have a great evening!  :)

Try 2.6.38.8-2pclos kernel when you see it on synaptic, maybe it will help you.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.
