Hi Gang. Unfortunately i bought a newer 1Gig Gigabyte/Nvidia graphics card which also has HDMI sound on it. It really stuffs up the settings trying to be held by KMix. Same problem years ago with an ATI Radeon. I dont use and never will have any use for the HDMI. All it does is create a giant headache.  Even if i go to KMix > Audio Set Up highlight the nvidia card output, the option to remove is blanked out / greyed out. I have removed the card for now but it is a brand new and better graphics card. But i need to know how to completely dissable the sound HDMI on the thing before installing it again.
I have had enough problems due to a logitech usb wireless headset. 7 entries in there for the one device. And it will not let me remove all the duplicate entries. The headset i have worked out to remove the USB transmitter (blinks when the actual headset not switched on ) before shutdown, plug it back in when the desktop is up. Touch wood, thats holding OK. So next is this bloody HDMI Sound ON THE Nvidia Graphics card. If any one can point me to a link / post or the most straight forward way to go about it i would greatly appreciate your help. Got to be an easy way, i hope!! Thanks gang.

I have the same problem, my card is a Nvidia 550 Ti, seems is wants to override my Soundblaster PCI card. I can't figure out how to disable the HDMI sound either.

Hmmm. I would think blacklisting the snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi module would work. But, according to that thread, it was only a partial solution. But, the thread ends on 11-03-2010, after a moderater posted "We do have a bug filed to attempt to solve this issue" on the previous day.

So, I would think that disabling EDID from xorg.org conf and providing a custom modeline that tells the TV how to display properly, as the original poster proposed in one solution, would be the way to go. But he doesn't give any details.

I don't have this video card. Good luck to you both.

Thanks very much for the reply posts and the link Linuzoid. Late last night, more like early hours 2.00am, I shutdown this thing and put the GF108 [GeForce GT 430] back in. As usual it took priority over CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller, the default / priority sound output. Again i set CK804 AC'97 Audio Controller to the top of the list, top priority in KMix. Loged out , restart X server and all good.
I have just booted up and it has held for a change. CK804 sound output working as it should. Like i said, its a real "hit and miss" as to what you will have at each boot up, what the system tells me does and does not work ! Any way people, thanks for your input very much and hope fully some one will come along with a definite way to fix the problem.  At least now i know im not the only one slowly being sent around the twist with sound hardware devices !  :)

Just another term for a disappearing act. ;D

Here we might use "doing a Hoffa" referring, of course, to Jimmy Hoffa.

Been known to do that a time or two myself. ;D ;D

After some research and a bit of trial and error I managed to disable the HDMI sound, here is what I did:

Open your favorite file manager in root( I use Krusader - root mode)
*Navigate to /etc/modprobe.d
*Open the file blacklist-compat in Kwrite
*Enter this at the end of the list or cut and paste the following:
 blacklist snd-hda-intel
*Save the file, log out of root and reboot.

This worked for me. I use a Soundblaster Digital 5.1 PCI card.

Peace

For those using Pulse Audio it is a matter of disabling the HDMI output on the configuration page (see third item)
