fatal server error [Solved]
« on: June 24, 2011, 05:01:41 PM »
Suddenly I'm unable to boot my machine (a desktop running an Intel i5 750 and Nvidia GTX 470).

The boot process ends with a prompt for my user name and password.  After I supply those, a command line appears. I then attempt to "startx" but unsuccessfully.  I hope someone can please help!

Here is the output of Xorg.0.log:

Try opening a command (console) window, as root enter the command

XFdrake --auto

When it is finished type "exit" and than enter "startx" and see if that works for you.

Hi,

At time of grub boot screen, press F3, choose default and add the parameter: vmalloc=256M

Thanks - vmalloc=256M worked! I have the desktop back. However all "desktop" effects are gone and there is no sound.

Also, I rebooted a second time without manually typing "vmalloc=256M" at the boot screen and again a black screen appeared prompting me for a user name and password. "Startx" did not work. So will I need to manually include "vmalloc=256M" each time I boot the machine?

Clicking on the "resume desktop effects" button in "Desktop Effects - System Settings" does not work. A message pops up saying "KWin window manager - the following desktop effects could not be activiated..."

I didn't see anything obvious in the "Sound and Video Configuration" that would account for sound not working.

I wonder what the heck happened!

the problems are related to the recent updates to xorg 1.10.2, in this section you can find further help if needed:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/board,77.0.html

about kwin message, you could test by creating a new user and see if the new user is affected by the same issue,
alternatively you can try to remove the file /home/<your-username-here>/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc and restart the desktop.

Thank you - I installed the latest kernel and got the desktop and all the effects back.

Still no sound though.
