Thanks Just19, but I'm stubborn! I'll fix this one or I'll kill it trying  :)  Probably the latter!

I want both now I've installed them!   ;D ;D

How do I remove the later kernel and downgrade Xserver, please (from a cli login)? Would I need to do both?
I'll try that next  :D
Thanks

not sure to understand your question: if you have installed from the test3 iso, you should actually have only one kernel: 2.6.38.8,
unless I missed something about your configuration ...

About downgrading Xserver, again, why ?
Please consider that PCLinuxOS is a rolling distro, you may want to keep your system always updated!
BTW, other than some small exception, downgrading is not supported.  ;)

This is a rolling release, meaning it moves forward not backward. Why would you want to downgrade the X server and kernel? What would you hope to accomplish?

I want to get the Gnome version booting! :-)  I have both Gnome (broken) and kde (working) installed now. I'm trying to get the Gnome system repaired.

AHA!  It's booted  ;D
I removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and x11-driver-video-nvidia-current and selected nouveau driver in the XFdrake setup screens with native resolution (1920x1200) and voila, it booted right up  :D
Very nice, but what do I do now? Do I leave things as they are or do I try the Nvidia driver again?  ::) Decisions, decisions.
I think I'll sleep on that one  ;)

I killed it again  ::)
I installed the dkms nvidia current and the x11 nvidia-current driver and tried to use the configuration utility (not drake) to set it up. On saying yes to the test function, it flashes the nvidia splash screen then just black screens. I left it 10 minutes and rebooted and tried again with drake. Sadly that didn't give me the test option so now it just black screens because it can't find a screen.
So there's definitely a problems with the driver or my laptop, though it's running nvidia-current on 5 other linux installs (same version).
Mind you, it is a Sony Vaio and they do speak to their screens differently to any other laptop, so who knows? Not me.
I've just re-installed the Gnome version again, but will not select the nvidia driver this time :-)
Interestingly enough though I get a flash of the nvidia splash screen even before I've enabled drivers.

Do you actually have any interest in using PCLinuxOS or are you here just to waste our support resources until you get bored and move to Linux distribution number 13? Nvidia drivers are Nvidia drivers and closed source so the only difference between distros is the version number.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

The proprietary nVidia drivers are already enabled on the live CD. They are also enabled when you install to hard drive. So, if you're seeing the nVidia splash screen at some point, it's because the proprietary driver is already installed.

If you want a working Gnome, open Synaptic on your working KDE installation. Mark either task-gnome or task-gnome-minimal for installation, then install. When you log out, you can choose either the KDE session or the Gnome session from the login menu. If you insist on having separate installations, download the latest PCLinuxOS Gnome beta version from: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=A4H19Q5V

Well I'll know that if and when the system works as intended won't I?
Wasting your support resources - what are you talking about? Isn't the nvidia driver supposed to work? Of course it is. I've installed it and it doesn't work with the Gnome system on my laptop - even though it works on several other Gnome-based distros on the same laptop. I was just wondering if I could get it to work. I would expect you to be wondering why it isn't working too.
If Nvidia drivers are Nvidia drivers (as you say) and the current version is working on 5 other Linux distros installed on the same laptop but not working on PCLinuxOS-gnome, then surely there must be some difference somewhere.

If you don't want to try to get to the bottom of it, Texstar, then that's fine. No problem at all. But don't have a chip at me just for a cheap shot. I'll make my own decisions as to which distros I iinstall and which I shall use on a daily basis.

djohnston, yes the Nvidia drivers are installed by default, but not active by default (or they weren't in the first 3 installations here).
Thanks for the link. I'll mosey on over there.

The test release was already suggested and rejected .....

There is also a test release of Gnome about ......  I cam across a link to it somewhere on the forum .......  if it is of interest?
Thanks Just19, but I'm stubborn! I'll fix this one or I'll kill it trying  :)  Probably the latter!

I'd rather try to fix what I've got when possible. I find I learn more that way. Sometimes things just don't work as they should though, so other options are good to have  :)

I've installed the latest Gnome beta version that Just19 linked me to and have had no problems whatsoever enabling the 275.09.07 Nvidia driver. Compiz is up and running with full effects and things are running smoothly........and fast  :)
Perhaps there's a difference between the two systems with regard to how they handle/load the driver. Something's different anyway  ???
