wharfhouse:

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum today.

Just FYI, I did some upgrades from the testing section, rebooted, and found I could not get the X server to start. I logged into another installation, checked in Synaptic and saw I'd missed a couple of packages. I listed those I thought I needed, then using my above Reply #27 as a check list, mounted the borked system's / partition,, did the chroot, started the network from there, and installed the missing packages with apt-get, left the chroot environment, rebooted to the previously borked system, and am now making this post from that now fixed system.

I just used my own post, to you, to solve my own self created problem.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well that's encouraging :D

It strikes me there's clearly a problem with all this because there seems to be loads of posts at the moment all with this common theme... anyway, before I run away with myself, back to business.

I had a go when I got home last night but my system fell at the first hurdle I'm afraid (I think??).  Here's the output:

Quote
[root@localhost ~]# umount -a
umount: /: device is busy

Bit puzzled as the CD was not spinning nor was there any read/write going on... or is this OK?  I didn't want to go any further without checking it out with you... sorry to be a pain but rather than make things even worse than they are, I'd rather be safe than sorry  ::)

The / partition that you see in the warning is the liveCD / which obviously can't be unmounted. What you are making sure are unmounted are all the partitions on the hard drive.

So it's OK to continue then?

Just one more thing...
Quote
[root@localhost /]# service network start                     <Enter>

That done, we update the package list;
[root@localhost /]# apt-get update                        <Enter>

then try to install any applications left out from the aborted previous upgrade.
[root@localhost /]# apt-get dist-upgrade                                <Enter>

Without leaving the liveCD, post your results to this stage, then wait for further instructions. Those instructions depend on your actual results.

..just want to check out what you said above... after the final command you want me to post any output straight away to the forum and wait for your reply? or can I after posting shut down the computer and wait for your reply??

Thanks :)

Yes. I want you to post your results and wait for a reply, without rebooting and without leaving the chroot environment that is running in the terminal.

Hmmm this could be interesting... doing this in real time considering the time difference on either side of the pond!  8)

I think the best thing to do is for me to check if you're on-line tonight when I get home and if you are, then take it from there  ;D

I wish!!!

I'm at work at the mo' and it's 9.15am.  I'm afraid it'll have to wait 'till I get home this evening... aah the drawbacks of not having a portable computer ::)

Then I'll keep checking until we find a time that works for both of us.  ;D

Morning O-P,

Unfortunately our paths didn't cross last night :-\
I'm sorry I don't know what the time difference is between us, but what if I were to ask you would you be around in about 11.5 hours time from now? That'll be the time when I'm back on my own PC.

Otherwise, if it's in the middle of the night for you, what might be the consequences of carrying on on my own, and shutting down after the chroot procedure?

I'm six hours difference from you. Your 18:00 (6:00 pm) is my noon. The only problem is that you would keep having to redo the chroot if the subsequent instructions warranted that. No problem with that, in general, just a lot of possible repeat work.

On the other hand, there is the advantage that repeating the instructions numerous times does tend to make the whole process stick in your own memory. It's kind of like learning the multiplication tables in school. If you are comfortable with that, it's perfectly fine by me.

1. I do be here.

2. Whiskey belongs in the mouth, on the way to the stomach, not in the hand.  ;D
