2011.6pclinuxos test 2 cd to usb stick
« on: June 21, 2011, 06:48:21 PM »
Hi all ... I know I'm rushing this a bit ... I need to repair my daughter-in-laws laptop this weekend. It won't boot to the desktop, just a CLI. This is after a borked attempt at an update... It gets to the CLI login but after logging in as root trying to run apt-get update hangs the system. Also trying apt-get dist-upgrade also hangs the system. I had them try (over the phone) to run XFDrake ... just goes to a black screen with cursor blinking in upper left corner ... have switch to tty2 and reboot .... so I heard about this new test spin 2011.6 and I figured I'd have that in case I need to do a re-install but for the life of me I cannot get the iso onto a USB stick ... I tried unetbootin, it goes through all the steps but when trying to boot with it I get an error about no operating system found ... I have tried it multiple times with the same error. I also tried to dd the iso to the disk ... but then it wasn't even seen as bootable ... anyone have any ideas??

   Thanks

Try using the PCLinuxos-liveUSB  package from the repository.

You can divide your Flash stick into multiple partitions if you wish.
Format the partition you intend to use as ext3
Then run the application.

You can do it all from a liveCD if you wish ... just make the correct selection of source of OS for the stick.

Another method is to convert the ISO to a hybrid and then 'burn' it to either a full Flash Stick, or using an option, to a Primary Partition on the stick.

regards.

If I use unetbootin on a usb stick I use GParted and format the stick to FAT16 or 32 and MAKE it bootable. then it works.

good luck. :)
