"talk" like utility
« on: June 21, 2011, 02:47:43 PM »
Does anyone know of an app that would allow two PCLOS machines on the same LAN to chat with one another. I tried the old unix "talk" utility, however, if the person misses the system notice - they miss it.  As well, they have to open a terminal then start "talk" (or is there a way to have the talk deamon start a terminal on its own).  I don't want to go through a server somewhere or run an IRC server on the LAN.  Just a simple way to message between the two - preferable with a gui that would pop-up when called.

Have you tried any of the IM clients?

Maybe creating an account using the IP address of the machines.

I did something similar a couple of years ago, but don't recall the details.

.....  maybe Pidgin ......

edit ....  I recall I did a speech chat using Ekiga in this manner

Thanks Just19,
That got me thinking - I checked out a few and found that kopete can do it with the Bonjour service - which uses local XMPP messaging.

Excellent!

Glad you have it sorted  ;)

Pidgin can  also use Bonjour ...  ;)  ....  just checked it out to be sure, and yes it works well for messages and file transfer.
Thanks for the reminder about this ... it will save some time now that I have it set up  ;D
