Changing Hostname
« on: June 21, 2011, 09:17:55 AM »
How can I change the hostname in PCLinuxOS? I changed /etc/hosts to what I want, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I searched the forum for "hostname," but any search with "hostname" in it seems to cause a problem with the php. A dialog comes up asking how I want to open index.php. That's a new one!  :P

I would also want to add that when setting up network connection via

Code: [Select]
drakconnect
tool there is a box (in both static and dynamic network steps) that allows to setup hostname.

Static:

Dynamic:

So if You used PCC >Network and Internet > Setup network interface all You had to do is fill that box and You are all done.

Upon reboot Your hostname should be set to whatever You chose.

Regards.

Have you tried searching the forum for anything with "hostname" in the search? It doesn't work - not for me at least.

Perhaps that isn't the proper place to be changing it from.

Funny a search works there just fine for me. Turned up quite a few results.  The question seems to keep being asked quite a bit in the forum.

Here is one link  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,73339.0.html check out the 4th or so post, titled "Can't change hostname [SOLVED]", and the links given in it.

Have you opened PCC (PCLOS Control Center  --> Select Network & Internet --> Host Definitions under OTHER

highlight a entry and than click on modify. It will open a window. Make your changes and Click ok. Remember that the changes you have made will be seen the next time you boot your machine.

The next time you start your machine. Open a console window and you should see your hostname. For example on mine as set up in the above image. I see this in a console window

[dwmoar@workbox ~]$

That's funny. No search for hostname works for me in any browser.

here it is in firefox:

midori:

chromium:

All other searches work (so far), unless they contain the word "hostname." Never seen that before. Other forums work, so it seems like php config of PCLinux must be off somehow.

if you don't put a name in the by user box that happens

if you put a name it does the search

i am on xp right now and it happens, report the error to the forum maintainer?

I can not replicate your issue within Firefox. Here is what I did. I click on the search button and got the following window.

I than entered the phrase "HOSTNAME" into the the Search For box and pressed enter. This is the results I got.

Note that there are 4 pages listed in the search results.

I did install both Chromium and Midori . I went to the forum in both of them.  Since I was already logged into the forum in Firefox I just went to do a search.  Guess what? Both failed as in your post. After thinking about it for for a second, I than logged into the forum in both Chromium and Midori and tried searching again. Guess what? This time the results were totally different.  I got the search results the same as I had in Firefox.  This would tell me that the problem that you are having is not caused by the PCLinusOS website but by something totally different.

Here is the screen shot of the Chrominum search. You can also see that I did not do anything in the search box than add the phrase I wanted to search for.  The results for the search of "hostname" were the same as what I received in Firefox.

This is true. I just started with a new .mozilla folder just to test and it works fine (for a while anyway).
