The default in Firefox says, preview in Firefox but I think it is using MPlayer.

so you use firefox to listen to your podcasts and you think firefox uses mplayer-plugin to hangle them? If so, when the player is started, right click on it and then click "configure" and choose a different audio output.

you should try to mention as much detail as you can  in your support questions. listening to podcasts in firefox should have been mentioned in your original post.

Can you give a link to these podcasts? It will be easier to help you if we can test ourselves

I was trying the podcasts listed on DistroWatch. I am not positive about what should be playing the podcasts by default. The postcast was an ogg and in Firefox the default for ogg is set as MozPlugger.

Edit: No ogg files  at all will play at all with Firefox.

whats the link to the podcast?

i just spent two minutes on distrowatch looking for a podcast link to test and i didnt find any. You already went there and hence you know the link and you could have post it. This is an example of detail i was talking about in my previous post you are supposed to mention in your posts. Be as detailed as you can be to eliminate time wasting in back and forth questions to get information you could have provided in the first place.

There is a list on the left near the bottom of the page.

Edit: I have spent all day working on sound problems on this one machine.. My other computer works fine, I just really want to get the problem machine working once and for all.  :)

I can copy a link to a podcast into VLC and it will play, just can't get it to work in Firefox....

Edit: I installed task pulse audio, configured sound in the control center, changed the settings in VLC to use pulse audio, everything is working except ogg files.

what version of firefox are you using? firefox uses a default/build it player to play the link here, no plug in involved.

Can you play a flash based video with sound? ie can you play a video with sound on youtube?

i have never used pulse audio and i do not know anything about it and hence your problem is beyond me since i can not set up my system to reproduce it and try to figure out the problem, hope somebody else who is using it will test test the problem and report back to you

I don't normally use Firefox and I have the same version (4.0.1). I don't have OGGs available and podcast files are just too large to buffer but I wanted to test Firefox sound. So what I did was open an MP3 and the Mplayer plugin buffered the file and played it. I got sound in Firefox. I even tried with an AVI and at first there's no sound. Right-click > Configure and Enabled DIVX support and I have A/V.

I suggest you try an offline MP3 then OGG just to see if the plugin works and you have sound. If you have sound then the problem might be with the connection to the service or the service itself.

if you are using kde then you have a lot of ogg audio files in your system in "/usr/share/sounds". You can test with one of them

Firefox uses a build in player to play ogg files and an embeded player to play mp3 files. I think he is having a problem playing sound with the build in player and tests must be done against the build in player by playing theora vorbis or theora or maybe with webm files.

Dang, you're right. Why'd I think I didn't have OGGs? Yeap, it plays in Firefox. And just to make sure, I tested it in Chromium as well and it works.

I can't think of any other test exploder can do to narrow the problem down.

But thanks for pointing out I have OGGs. I'll probably forget I have them ... again. ;)

I can get downloaded ogg files to play in VLC, I just can't get any podcasts to play in Firefox. I installed pulse audio to fix a problem with skipping sound for lack of a better description. All multimedia will play on my system except podcasts in Firefox. I have to be missing something....
