PCLinuxOS Openbox Bonsai 2011 for test
« on: June 20, 2011, 05:40:30 PM »
Hi,

A version as of June 19ths is available for test:
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-test-2011-06-19.iso
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-test-2011-06-19.md5sum

Bonsai is a minimal version meant to build -- I hope easily -- your own on top of it.
This time tint2 is the default panel, python is gone... webcorefonts as well. Midori also, replace by Jumanji, with some pre-configurations.
The kernel is the latest bfs available : 2.6.38.8.pclos1.bfs
All is up to date. The size of the iso is 248 MB.

Thanks for your feedbacks !
Regards,
Mélodie

PS: Next versions will be available on a new web space, here:
http://melodie.tyruiop.eu

exactly here:
http://tyruiop.eu/~melodie/Downloads/ISOS/PCLinuxOS_cli_iso_and_children
just for the fun... now I'm learning to use the shell zsh : http://tyruiop.eu
Quote
Par défaut, un shell zsh via une connexion ssh.

which means that when I login there with ssh I have to use something new. As Neal uses to say in his signatures. "So much fun !" ^^

Hi,

Bonsai as of July 15th, 2011 looks almost ready. Who wants to test it ?
Here it is:
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.15.iso
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.15.md5sum

272 MB, up to date... and in my virtualbox refuses to present the "Eject LiveCD then press Enter" message. Could you tell me how it goes for you ?

Else, here is an image:

Hi, Bonsai July 22 is here:
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.iso 265M
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.md5sum 68

Several services deactivated : ntpd, apmd, numlock, laptop-mode.
Up to date... there is a new upower package arrived in the update. (Or was it libupower ? Both are very recent anyhow)

Synaptic desktop file modified to get rid of the ldconfig message (was due to the option "gksu -u root /usr/sbin/synaptic", replaced by "gksu -l /usr/sbin/synaptic", indicated by siamer).

I think it's about all.
Good testing to all ! We should be close to the next final.

Regards,
Mélodie

Hi,
Date : 2011 July 27
This is the Bonsai setup with Factory as Timezone, kernel 2.6.38.8.pclos3.bfs again, and an additional cdrkit package so that wodim (console CD burning) can be used from within the distro. It appearantly has not added weight to it (263 MB).

There are also 2 more right-click menus in the main menu, PCC and Synaptic.

The direct links:
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.iso
pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.md5sum

I hope the good result I got in my Dell Pentium 4, thanks to ongoto's findings will also be found in all your machines. Until I know this, I anyhow want to say a special thanks to ongoto for his research and feedback. This issue seems particularly nasty to me.

ongoto : thanks a lot !!!

Thanks also to all who test and bring feedbacks for this little flavor. It's a great team ! :D
Regards,
Mélodie

Mélodie,

Up and running in VirtualBox.  Only one minor problem noted when creating a new user.  You might want to udpate the cached files in /etc/skel/.cache/menus to reflect your current changes.  All else is running fine.

PCLOS LXDE (Desktop 1)
Debian 6 (Desktop 2)
PCLOS OpenBox Bonsai (11 year old laptop)

running it in VirtualBox as well. I posted a pic over in June's screenshots.

one question, are we going to have to edit the menu by hand in the new Bonsai?

Not at all, sir.
Would you by any hazard, think that the panel has anything to do with the dynamic menus ? If so, you may want to read here: http://mimasgpc.free.fr/openbox-menu_en.html

:-)

Jeff : thanks, will keep in mind to check the feedbacks for next version.
Ferre : I'll look forward for your feedback.

if you mean the tint2 panel no, I don't think they have anything to do with each other. my menu is not dynamic. I assume you posted the link if I want dynamic menus. or I'm just tired.  ;D

Your menu is dynamic, I assure you. But first you are in a Vbox machine, second you need to click into the menus once or twice before it appears. It's dynamic, but not "instant".

I didn't post the link you say. I posted the presentation by the dev of openbox-menu program (link in English... translated from French).

The pic is beautiful... all the pics are beautiful, and your's are very astonishing... mamma if one day you dive into all the possible options in Openbox...

first of all, I'm glad you liked the pics. thank you.  ;D

as far as the menus go, I had installed a number of programs which never show in the menu. it's why I was asking if I have to edit the menu file manually. I did run both the 2010 bonsai  and the full openbox before and they would both "update" the menu. in other words, when I installed Firefox, Firefox would show in the menu once I restarted, logged out and in etc. I do have more than one distro running openbox and all but one updates its menu when a program is installed.

I don't think it's a virtual machine issue.

Hi,

I am in the virtual machine : Openbox Bonsai test, 2011 06 19. I opened a terminal, su to root, "apt-get update" and install leafpad first, viewnior next, both appeared in the menus. I took a screenshot after installing leafpad:

After install, I opened the menus 3 times in a row, without waiting in between, then it appeared (menu-cache needs that to refresh... )

You can try this : erase the content of /home/user/.cache/menus (the 2 files). Logout/login. If there is no menus in "Applications", try to start "openbox-menu" in user console.

This should display the whole content of the rc.xml file (/home/user/.config/openbox/rc.xml).

Else, Jeff told me I need to place the 2 cached files in the /etc/skel directory. And there, there is also one directory I forgot to make belong to "root.root" also, and which needs to be done (so that the new users will get the configuration too).

Else, if that still does not work for you : have you checked the md5sum ? Or would you retry with a fresh install ? Else, you can try to see if you find the related desktop file in /usr/share/applications (firefox should be there at least... ). If the file is there, it has to appear in the menus. If not, there is a problem. If you don't know in what section it appears, you can open the related desktop file with a text editor and look at the line "category".

Regards,
Mélodie

Last for today : once in the Live, please open a console, su to root, cd to /etc/skel/.config and do a "chown -R root.root jumanji". This way once installed you will get the pre-configurations I added for Jumanji. (Default page to pclinuxos.com, and other few things taken at the faq/doc/scripts page of the program).

I'll correct it for the next version.

Thanks,
Mélodie

Melodie, thank you for your work on the Openbox distro.

I have very little experience with linux so I have hesitated to post here.  But I want to learn more about openbox and I have been playing with some of your work for a couple of weeks.  Maybe my comments will be helpful.

With the LiveCD I noticed something that must be related to the menu.cache as you explained for LJK.  When I first right-click the desktop to open the menu, under Applications>Editors> it shows Geany.  But then if I colse the menu and open again, it shows SciTE.  And SciTE works as it should.  (Some remnant from the full version I think?)

When I go to PCC to set up the firewall, the script tells me that I must download the package mandi-ifw and the package shorewall.  This is no problem of course, but would it be better if these packages were already in the iso?  (I think this is the same also in your full version RC.)

Of course those are very minor things, but maybe this is more important.  Could there be a problem in the shutdown script?  When I choose shutdown from the menu my machine reboots instead of shutting down completely.  This happens on two different computers with this 6.19 Bonsai Test iso run from the livecd.  (It also happens with your 2011.6.13 full version RC that I installed on a hard drive.  But it does not happen with the official 2010.11 Bonsai.)  Has anyone else experienced this?

--Bill

Maybe the shutdown problem is the same as this:

ok Melodie, I don't know why but I tried rebooting, logging in and out as I said, but, once I had shutdown completely and restarted, everything I had installed showed up in the menu. Also, I was using synaptic to install things and not apt-get. not sure if that's an issue or not.

I've installed to a liveusb. I added Midori and it did not show up in the menu, but I right clicked on the desktop, selected 'Openbox -> Reload Openbox', checked the menu and Midori was there.

I am thrilled that this project exists. However, I don't seem to have zram working. I was hoping that was still the default setup. Jumanji is not for me. ;) A quick install of Midori and I can post in the forum.

All of the PCLinuxOS goodness in a very fast, simple package!

Galen

Correction: I mis-read the output of the 'free' command. I found that zram was activated using the 'swapon -s' command. Sorry, for the error.
