Okay, you're saying that you actually gain a bit of memory capacity because of the compression used in the zram block device. I understand that. And, yes, I know physical RAM is always quicker than disk storage. Thanks for the explanation.

Yes, and at worse you would get the same amount, but not less.

Hi,

I am hoping feedbacks from the testers who have met with the shutdown/reboot issue, to confirm that it now works fine.

I would like to know if the menus "PCC" and "Synaptic" in the main right-clic menus seem ok to all. By the time I get answers to theses two questions, and also waiting for pinoc's next addlocale and lomanager which should be in the repositories soon, I will work on the Openbox full and Education flavors, to make them catch up with the improvements done on Bonsai.

Regards,
Mélodie

I could live without those if you really want to know.    Is Bonsai finalized then with the last iso ?
Would like to start loading some software into it permanently.

:) Bonsai looks and feels good, although present hardware is a bit outdated: Fujitsu-Siemens xS with 500MHz Pentium III, 192 MB ram and PanaSync screen which has lost some colours.

PCC and Synaptic work from both the main menu and the submenus, on both HD install and live CD. I just did 4 more live CD shutdowns without issue.

Hi Melodie,

I downloaded the latest Bonsai iso last night and burned the CD today.  I ran the liveCD on both of my machines that previously experienced the shutdown/reboot problem.  With the latest Bonsai there is no longer a problem--all shutdowns are normal!

PCC, Synaptic, and all menus seem to work as expected!

Can you tell me which change was responsible for curing the shutdown problem?

Good Job!

Edit: While I was fixing things earlier, I added some packages, libraries, etc. for testing the halt problem and decided to reinstall to wipe the slate and start again fresh.  Same cd, same partition, same machine.  I don't have the restart problem now.
I realized finally that I had used the default (Paris) time zone on the first attempt.  My time here is 8 hours later. I wasn't careful and the screen resolution wouldn't let me see the whole window, so I messed up.  To prove my suspicions, I reinstalled once again (Paris time) and sure enough, the restart problem is back.

So I thought I might try "Factory" as timezone.

I am happy to learn that it now works for you too, particularly as you are the first who pointed to this issue. Soon, we hopefully will have the final... with an updated Openbox package ? :)

Hi Melodie:

Ok I have downloaded and burned to a CD-RW 2011.07 and booted the live cd on my laptop.  Loads fine, but when I shutdown or select "reboot" it will go all the way to ejecting the cd and after I remove the cd then press "enter" nothing happens.

Hi,

I am sorry to hear that. I will burn a CD and look how it goes here. I have a former one, with the kernel 2.6.37.pclos4.bfs, which does not produce this effect. I'll burn anew (don't like burning CD's... I prefer using USB stick... )

Melodie:
I have installed Openbox on this laptop and shutdown works fine.  Also I had to install the b43 module to get my wireless to work, but I consider this a minor issue since I used a wired ethernet connection to install it.  And it would probably add to the size of the iso to have every module needed for connectivity.  So this is why I consider it a minor issue, but if both the ethernet and wireless did not work............ Then I would consider it a MAJOR issue  :D :D

ka9yhd,

I just burned to CD and tried a boot and a shutdown in my T60 laptop, the shutdown worked fine. I tried a boot and a shutdown on the desktop P4 Dell, the shutdown worked fine too. Between boot and shutdown for both I started a few programs, to let a little time between the start of the session and the shutdown.

Just after the burn I let the CD cool down and invoked a md5sum against the device : "md5sum /dev/sr0" with the CD inserted again in it. It was good. The value you must find is this:

$ cat pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.md5sum
9919f82c894939681832158356af83f6  pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.iso

do you have the right version ?

Mélodie

Yes this is what I have:

9919f82c894939681832158356af83f6  pclinuxos-openbox-bonsai-2011.07.iso

I verified the md5 with what you had posted on your download page.

Melodie:
I believe the problem is with specific computers, maybe certain chipsets.  I do not consider not shutting down after removing the cd a problem with the live cd.  I can always press and hold the power button until my laptop shuts off.  However I do consider it a problem if the installed version does not shut down, but the installed version shuts off my laptop.......... So no problem for me.  ;D
