Not sure what I'm doing wrong here. K3Bsetup says to check the devices I want to change permissions for, but there's no checkbox for the burner, only for cdrao, cdrecord & growisofs.

The permissions were set to 660 root:root, which of course is useless for users. I checked "use burning group" and made a burning group in /etc/burning, added my users to it, and now k3bsetup says the burner permissions are 660 root:burning, but still won't let users use it.

I then manually changed the permissions of /dev/sr0 to root:burning 775, 776, and 777 but none of them worked. K3B says there's no burner and won't see it.

What's wrong?

Go to configure your computer, and in localdisk CD/DVD burner you should be possible to set the permissions there
Office required Windows XP or better, so I installed PCLinuxOS :D

KDE CC - System Admin - K3bSetup ........  tick the boxes available, Apply and supply root password when asked.

I don't use a burning group and this works admirably it seems.

Is there no device listed in the panel above the three packages you mentioned?

Thanks, that seems to have worked. Setting it in the k3b setup screen wasn't working for some reason - it just kept getting set to root:root 660. Then after I would set it once, the checkbox would go away.

One other thing I noticed though is that KsCD doesn't work. Not sure if that's related or not. It loads up the CD, everything appears in the playlist, but it just doesn't play anything. It's not a big deal with so many other media players available, but I just wanted to mention it in case it's a bug. I'll start another thread if no one has any ideas.

I too seem to have this problem with k3b on a lxde system, a amd athlon xp 2600 that has yet to see the big xorg update (and probably never will.  ;) ) I noticed this about a week ago and kinda moved on before doing anything about it.

How do you access the kde CC from lxde anyway? I'd rather not login to the kde desktop on this machine if possible.  :-\

Use instead

K3b - Settings - Set up System Permissions

The same settings are available from there, as far as I know.

Ah yeah, that's my problem. I try and let it do the changes and they won't stick. Doesn't ask for root pw either.  ???

Edit: sorry forgot to mention I get the error message "Cannot run worker".

Maybe there is an alternate means of setting the permissions of those items in LXDE .......  else there is something maybe not present in your install?
It could be done manually I guess  ;)

I suggest the LXDE section ...  someone there may have come across this previously.

Humph. Both suggestions would require actual work on my part.  >:(

Ok it KAuth that's messing stuff up me thinks:

Quote
   KAuth::Action *action = authAction();
    action->setArguments(args);

    KAuth::ActionReply reply = action->execute();

    if (reply.failed()) {
        // TODO: We can give some more details about the error here
        kDebug() << reply.errorCode() << reply.errorDescription();
        KMessageBox::error( this, i18n("Cannot run worker.") );
        emit changed( true );
    } else {

Upgrading this machine to the kde 4.6.5 from testing. Will see if this will help in any way...

Running 2011.6 KDE4 + full upgrade from testing and I never got this error even tho I am running LXDE as a main desktop but I could setup the k3b permissions no problemo.

Will report back.
