I have an updated system and am trying to install the newer Kernel version 2.6.38.8  A64  (I have AMD CPU).  My old kernel was 2.6.33.7

Now my system boots up and ends in the black screen with the "localhost login:" prompt.    I think that means linux is booted up to a command line but the GUI (Xorg or X server) isn't loading.

I have signed in under root and followed these instructions that I found in the forums with no luck:

At the login prompt, login as root. Then enter:

rm -f /etc/X11/xorg.conf
XFdrake --auto
reboot

It didn't change anything nor get me working again as I still always end up back at the "localhost login:" prompt.

I also have tried doing all of this with the same 2.6.38.8 kernel but in the PAE version since I have 4gb of memory but it still ends up at the same point.   Both of the new kernels have been added to the boot up menu where I select them.

What do I need to be doing differently;  or at the black screen "localhost login:" prompt to get the system to complete the boot cycle with the normal GUI interface?

Did you try typing startx then pressing enter after you login with the terminal ?

Edit:
Also you may have to type XFdrake in the terminal and press enter and setup your graphics card again.

Yes I have and it seems to end up stopping after some sort of error(s).

Some sort of errors means nothing to the rest of us. The actual error messages tell you why the X server didn't start. Knowing why it didn't start leads to a solution; either simple configuration, or driver change.

If you don't understand what the error messages mean, it's almost certain someone here will know, but we can't see the error messages. You have to observe, and report the exact messages so that we can see what you see.

Using XFdrake command I got it working.   I was using startX with no luck.   Thanks for the help as I was stumped!
