Another Partitioning Question (SOLVED)
« on: June 19, 2011, 02:40:01 AM »
I thought I had graduated from Newborn to Toddler, but it seems I am still learning to walk here a little.

Point:

Second computer.

Brand New 500 gig Hard drive. Totally blank. Made the standard Partitions using the live CD. Installed PCLinuxOS and totally updated with KDE desktop.

/ = 20 gigs

/swap = 4 Gigs

/home = 200 Gigs

I then was going to use the rest and either call it backup or data.

Here is my issue............

When I click on my Home folder (which brings up Dolphin) and under PLACES I thought I would see.

Home
Network
Root
Trash
Timeline
Backup or Data (whichever name I chose)

Instead it makes a Backup or Data folder in the root folder and when opened has still another folder called lost+found.

It appears I can make a copy of this folder under PLACES, but that truly was not my goal.

Am I missing something elementary?

You probably have pointed it to /data or /backup instead of /mnt/data/  :)

First of all we have to see the output of the commands blkid and fdisk -l -u=cylinders. And the contents of your /etc/fstab. Then we'd know what is mounted where.

OK...........switching gears here a little.

Since this is a bare drive with no data on it, I pulled all the partitions.

I know when setting it up again I need

/

/Swap

/Home

If I want the additional space used as a data drive, am I correct that the entry for that would be

/mnt/data/

As in my original post I would like this to appear as such.

When I click on my Home folder (which brings up Dolphin) and under PLACES I would like to see.

Home
Network
Root
Trash
Timeline
Data

You could have just changed the mount point of the Data partition  :(

Use either /mnt/Data  or   /media/Data  for the mount point. (I presently prefer /media)

It will always, when mounted, appear in the file system as you described, showing its contents.

The 'Places' is just a short cut to that location.

You can add a Folder location to Places and go directly to it by clicking on the relevant Places icon. You can choose a specific icon for any entry.
That is what happens with all those listed.

/ = 20 gigs

As you have plenty of space you may want to consider making / (root) larger than 20GB - it's much easier/beneficial having extra space than the problems that can occur when running out of space. Especially when making remasters.

And as Just19 says, Places is really just a panel holding shortcuts to those folders/drives etc

You can drag folders on to the Places panel for a shortcut to be placed on it (right click allows removal)

Another tip for mounting partitions is to go to

Configure Your Desktop >> Hardware >> Removable Devices

And select the  Enable Automatic Mounting of Removable Media tick box and then from there select which partitions to mount - and when - you want it mounted  (it see's partitions as "removable media" )

Thank you one and all. This has got to be the greatest and most knowledgeable forum I have ever had the privileged to be a part of.

I did as Menotu suggested and increased the root partition to 30 gigs. May be a waste, but what the hey I have the space so why not use it.

I also used /mnt/media/ to add the Media partition to the list under Places. At first it showed as a 211 Gig folder until I gave it a label of Media.

I still have a slight issue (something I could live with if I had to). When clicking on this Media folder it still contains a folder called lost+found. I thought perhaps right clicking on it would give me a choice to delete it but it does not. When you try to access it, I get an error message about it either not being mounted or no access. (I'm sorry, I am doing updates now and cannot get the exact wording).

Again, thanks to all who made suggests. I'm getting better but still have a long way to go.

lost+found isn't anything to worry about.

If I open Dolphin and select Root and then select  home I will see 3 folders

myname
lost+found
mysql

I think the lost+found folder is used by Linux in the event of system crash or when file systems are being checked.......
