Re: Intel mobile 4 graphics driver and KDE4 problems

At this point, modified kdmrc with 2.6.37.x seems OK but with 2.6.38-8 is now locking to nbcmw BEFORE login screen comes up. THen hit ctrl+alt+bckspc which restarts x and login screen comes up.

Several observations:

1. Most any time, after using a different kernel ( have not tried adding any codes to either kernel at boot time), reboot screen appears in upper left at about 30% size of normal "PCLOS booting" screen

2. The logout issue seems to only happen after extended periods of session. If I log in/out rapidly- no issues.

3. Once logged in all seems fine but we're still testing browser, grsync, Office, ssh'ing into other PC and other stuff

4. 2.6.37.x seems better than 2.6.38-8 but by no means scientific

5. Did catch one log that has the line "perhaps server is stuck in a loop"  and saved but can't find it now, however, todays Xorg.0.log shows:

There is a notice about the non-PAE kernel but did not install it b/c it indicated it was suitable for servers. Just figured I would use the bfs like the current kernel.

1. Most any time, after using a different kernel ( have not tried adding any codes to either kernel at boot time), reboot screen appears in upper left at about 30% size of normal "PCLOS booting" screen

I can confirm this as:
using kernels newer than 2.6.33.7 the screen appears in upper left corner at 1024x768 instead of the configured resolution. (1280x1024 in my case, intel i915)

If these x lockups are restricted to just logins/logouts I suppose we can work around them, but I have all my business data on a Desktop running KDE3.5.x and am concerned about migrating everything to KDE4 if there is/are deeper issues. I have now loaded pclos 2010.12 and testpclos2011.6 on 2 laptops and one desktop and have had issues with the Intel graphics on the two  Intel laptops that have either been upgraded or running the new 2011.6. I haven't noticed these issues on the 2012.12 install that WAS NOT upgraded, but then again I just followed "protocol" and upgraded as per instructions. I may just reinstall 2010.12 and NOT upgrade and see what happens.

The desktop is AMD Athlon /1gb RAM using ATI Radeon 9250 and no login/logout lockups but there are issues with desktop effects. ( I think it has to do with the ATI Radeon 9250 but it has 256 mb RAM - I thought this should be enough but maybe it's too old)

I have bookmarked numerous threads about problems with KDE4/kdm and the Intel stuff. I have never filed a bug report but from all the KDE4 upgrade chatter, I'm sure someone has done it already, so I thought I would just stay here on these forums and try to work it out, but pretty much in over my head.

Not afraid to try stuff as this laptop has no data but I think I've tried 90% of everything a noob can be expected. These things are usually a simple fix but finding the needle in the haystack is the problem.

I am receiving brief errors during boot about "backlight" and "fb" errors but can't find them in /var/log/messages or other logs and they flash by so fast I'm going to have to video the boot and post those here as well. If needed, i can post all lspci, lsmod, log messages, kdmrc, xorg.conf and anything else needed to help someone solve this.

PCLOS really is at the top of the heap as I have tried many, many other distros, but this is stopping me dead in the water.

Some threads claim "module fbcon module not found" is harmless but I doubt the "server is in endless loop" is harmless?

x11-server-xorg installed is latest version according to synaptic. X11 meta package is NOT installed. What is this?

x11-driver-video-intel is the latest installed according to synaptic.

Hope this helps

Looking at my xorg.conf I do have OPTION "DPMS" under:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "device1"
    VendorName "Intel Corporation"
    BoardName "Intel 810 and later"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "DPMS"

Looking in xorg.conf man pages shows many references in ServerFlags sections to DPMS however, and says see below in "monitor".

THis is the line below in monitor section:

Options
Some Option flags that may be useful to include in Monitor sections (when needed) include "DPMS", and "SyncOnGreen".

Apparently this is for ability to adjust screen brightness and "sleep" or hibernate" but is this interfering somehow? Can't find any reference to that in man page. Anyway, commented out that line and rebooted using 2.6.38-8 kernel and still have ability to adjust screen brightness and suspend to RAM. Have not tried hibernate. Maybe the DPMS options ( some timeouts) , since not specified in my xorg.conf file, were interfereing.

Will give this a go for a day or two.

Thanks

Re: Intel mobile 4 graphics driver and xorg / KDE4 problems
« Reply #20 on: July 04, 2011, 02:03:16 PM »
Just installed 2011.6KDE FRESH on to this Tosh Satellite A305 / Intel Mobile 4 graphics /3 gb RAM.  I have not as of yet tinkered with xorg, kdmrc or PCC like I did previously . Created second user, logged out>log in to second user and am unable to enable desktop effects for second user. Error is " unable to enable in current configuration".

This leads me to believe that my original issues with upgrading 2010.12 were valid and kdm (or something) is unable to "release" video driver / effects to the new user. I have tried several combinations in "configure desktop" making sure that effects are DIFFERENT for each user and then tried with THE SAME for each user. I finally stumbled across a configuration in desktop effects that does not give me the warnings, but....

I have just been visited by nbcwm (non-blinking cursor working mouse, although now mouse cursor changes to I-beam) TWICE in the past 10 minutes in the middle of a session. Have to C+A+Bckspc which brings me to login.

I can post relevant files if necessary.

Can anyone with Intel 4 Mobility confirm this issue when creating another user? Would really like to incorporate this Toshiba A305 laptop into the office network but I can't have x lockups in the middle of a session.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Intel mobile 4 graphics driver and xorg / KDE4 problems
« Reply #21 on: July 04, 2011, 11:56:43 PM »
Have now tried intel drivers, xorg drivers and modified kdmrc on 2011.6 and still have nbcwm occasionally in middle of session. ctrl+alt+bckspc takes me to login and I can resume exactly where I was with any apps I had open still there as if nothing had happened. (for example in the middle of this post).

I do notice that the Vertrefresh range is set at "60" whereas horiz is given in range of "28.1 -90".

Any ideas?

[UPDATE] have exhausted all avenues, ran across xorg. dev threads about rendering  problems with drawables and all kinds of stuff way over my head. This seems all to be related to Intel, openGL compositing, possible kwinrc or kdmrc files being overwritten by some other process , dbus and xorg/ xserver. Too many variables. I have hit the point of diminishing returns after almost 2 weeks of daily searching far and wide.

Although xrender is choppier and cannot initiate many desktop effects ( have tried disabling functionality checks as per other threads), it appears xserver crashes are less frequent so am going to stick with it a while and see what happens.

The only other thing of note is depending on settings immediately after logging out of session, the notice "stopping display manager kdm" before dropping to login screen.. Still think kdm is not resetting or restarting for each user.

May try Compiz if I can figure out how to disable Kwin. When I try to launch compiz via console, error is " another window manager is already in use".

As originally posted this laptop will be hopefully integrated into office network and the desktop effects are low priority, but the xserver crashes with or without effects are pretty much a show stopper.

Guess it doesn't like my hardware but can't figure out why all is OK on the Toshiba NB305 netbook using openGL compositing.

2011 on Toshiba A305 / Intel Mobile 4 graphics (GM45 I believe) using xrender compositing for effects and xorg "intel" driver has been fairly stable for several days now with just one xcrash. Did update which  caused synaptics tapping to stop working but Texstar solution #2 fixed that. ( had read some threads about xserver issues while scrolling, hence the update).

Not being one to give up, I  reverted back to "i810 and later driver" which is the 2011 default , but modified xorg.conf to reflect 2010.12 xorg.conf which loads many modules besides just the "v4l" of the 2011 install. I do notice with this configuration that Fn screen brightness buttons DO work and don't have to access it from KDE config center.

With this configuration I ran Neverball with all effects (textures, shadows, etc), a youtube video, and desktop effects  ( using openGL compositing)  with most effects enabled simultaneously with only one crash. I have Xorg.0.log and kdm.log which do reference a warning, a segfault. and "cannot connect to Dbus server" which I can post.

So I re ran XfDrake as per Texstar ( I had done this a while back to no avail) which loads only "v4l" in "Modules" section  of xorg.conf and at this point, the only modifications  from a clean  2011 install I believe are the ones to [X-*-Core] of kdmrc by adding "TerminateServer=true" as per Xorg kdm configuration recommendations  and the last update which affected the touchpad. This configuration DOES NOT allow for Fn screen buttons to work but that is accessible from KDE control center.

Am doing everything possible to crash this x configuration by again running neverball, watching youtube, dragging windows, scrolling, logging into and out between users WITHOUT closing applications,  and am going to heap an rsync transfer and an .iso download all simultaneously. Graphics are not as "smooth" as with the old 2010.12 xorg.configuration (glxgears slows to 35FPS and is slightly jerky and so is neverball), but stability is paramount here. We'll see what happens.

There are enough threads (archlinux, gentoo, xorg messageboards, Narly Nachos) implicating Xorg, openGL, Plasma workspace, Intel and KDE / kdm to validate my observations, but I may just have a funky hdwr combination and am still committed to PCLOS as no other distro even comes close.

[UPDATE] Guess it was not meant to be. Ran the GPU hard today. Neverball, youtube, glxgears, desktop effects, rsync transfer, Several openoffice windows open, logging in and out, in and out. Dragging windows scrolling up down sideways. .... Nothing, not a peep... Beautiful. DID this all day! NO HANGS! Shutdown. Yes, it's ready!

Tonight - login to user02, open Dolphin, drag two printer driver .rpms from USB stick to Documents folder and voila!

nbcwmbs (non-blinking cursor working mouse blank screen) had to ctrl+alt+bckspc - logged in and continued session asif nothing had happened.

[UPDATE]

For what it's worth , am running pclos 2010KDE4.6.3 kernel 2.6.33.7-pclos6 on a Compq CQ50 with same Intel Mobile4 graphics with no issues

[UPDATE2] As of 07/11 Installed 2011 KDE on the above Compaq CQ50 / Intel Mobile 4 graphics with no  apparent problems. Will probably use this for the office but hate to abandon the Toshiba as it has very good specs.

[UPDATE3] Reinstalled 2011 fresh onto Toshiba. install went fine. Created new user. Logged in and had xserver crash..

So far on the Toshiba I have had  the following and or errors:

random xserver crashes, one or two lockups,
Xorg.0.logs - "server is probably stuck in a loop"

kdm.log - Cannot connect to Dbus "

kde " monitor has been disconnected / changed , woulfd you like to configure" Sometimes as many as 40 windows cascade onto desktop

"fb module not found"

Here's what I've done on toshiba:

installed from 2012.12 and upgraded
installed from 2011 test2 and upgraded
installed from 2011 fresh

remove and reset  xorg.conf as per Texstar
renamed .kde and or .kwinrc or created new users
altered /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
tinkered with xorg.conf as per recommendations
updated and used Texstar solution #2 for synaptics
Tried with and without various desktop effects enabled - using both opengl (w and w/o vsync)and xrender
Tried  display settings in BIOS to auto or (LCD+CRT)
Shut off screensavers

The problem is that I cannot tie any cause to any effect. The only thing that is certain now is that GPU intensive stuff HAS NOT crashed x. It happens if the desktop is idle with NO activity or with simple scrolling in a browser or file manager.  Don't know enough about APIC, ACPI, nolocalacpi.

The two solution that have given longest session without crash:

copy xorg from 2010.12 Live disc onto the 2011 installation
run 2011 without an xorg.conf file

Any ideas appreciated
Thanks
