just plug it in and see which one will load up to handle the card. We will then try to figure out what to do next when nothing loads up automatically

If you have the card un plugged, then do the following.

1. open the terminal and log in as root
2. run this command to make sure system log service is running: service syslog start
3. Plug in the card and then wait for five seconds
4. run this command and post its output: tail -n 20 /var/log/syslog

while you are still on the terminal, run this command while the usb device is plugged in and post its output

The Adaptor shows up in usb Devices.

syslog no kernel module package for module

I think I need rtl 8192 drivers.

I can get the drivers for linux from the edimax site. Do not know how to install them or if I should. do not like to install outside synaptic.

what makes you think thats the module you need?

what kernel are you running? you can know this by opening the terminal and type "uname -r"

You should already have this driver on your system. Open synaptic and then search for "rtl8192" and then install all packages that will show up(two showed up here) and then try to use the card

is there any reason why you are not giving outputs i am asking? I will stop asking if you prefer not to give any.

it looks like the driver is not in the repository and in any of the kernels i have looked at.

The proper course of action to take is to create a package request thread and ask for the driver for this card to be added. Give as much info as you can including the link to where to get the driver.

If you cant do the above or  you cant wait for the driver to find its way into the repository or if it can not be added for reasons that may include distribution restrictions, then you may install the driver from their website.

We generally do not advise people to install from outside the repository but an exception can be made when there is no other alternative. Just know what you did when you take such an action and mention it when asking support in anything related to it.

The reason I'm not giving you outputs is because I'm getting the information second hand.if I get over to his house this weekend I'll post the outputs.

thanks

Thanks Guys for the help.

I went with a Netgear wna 1100. worked out of the-Box.

the edimax was real low in price.so I did not lose any thing.May be too new for Linux.Like the netgear better anyway
