Thanks again for the reply.
I have just reformatted the usb stick and reinstalled.

OK, all went well I guess.
This is a live install as before I presume.

It would be useful if you confirm that it booted OK & without incident.

I then tried pcc - boot - setup boot system as before.

Why ?   ... or what are you trying to do that necessitates doing this?

Still the sda10 problem.

Yes, it seemed to go well.

Just reinstalled xfce after trying e17 and Linux Mint 11 (prefer PCLos)
boots up ok, update - same problems as before, error messages that it cannot find sda10.
Left with plymouth not updated, sda10 problem.
Also installed Wine - sda10 problem, error messages, but still installed.
Not on Xfce menu though.

Will keep using Xcfe on stick and now and then repost a message to see if there are any answers :-(

Still problem, reboot Gnome (on hdd) after running Xfce on stick, first time of reboot get kernel panic and
it doesn't load. Second time of reboot get so far and it then hangs. Third try loads ok.
As I said in my earlier post, I never had this problem before running from USB.

Did you check Synaptic repositories as I suggested? ...........  presuming you are using Synaptic to do the update ........

Do you get  *any* updated packages?

Have you adjusted the Synaptic repository sources to point to the correct locations? .........  see the link at the top of this page ........

Sorry, should have said earlier.

Yes I did check repositories. On first install there were 2 set, cant remember first, but second was megagames.
Now only one set.

Ran Phoenix Menu - Software Centre - Update Package Sources list.
Sources.list is now
# Package repository URL's

# Signed repositories have a [<key>] where <key> is the name of the key
# as it appears in vendors.list. If you remove it, no digital signature check
# will be made.

rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree games kde4

# rpm http://distro.ibiblio.org/pclinuxos/megagames/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 megagames

# rpm http://ftp.nl.freebsd.org/os/Linux/distr/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree games kde4

# rpm http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree games kde4

# rpm http://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/MIRRORS/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree games kde4

# rpm http://pclosusers.com/pclosfiles/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree games kde4

Synaptic repository set to
rpm http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/pclinuxos/apt/ pclinuxos/2010 main updates nonfree games kde4

Yes I do get updates.
First run of Synaptic after creation gives about 650 updates.
Carried out updates - no problems, still got mention of sda10 (cant remember where) but seemed ok.

Now  if do Synaptic - Reload - Mark Updates I get
To be removed
pclinuxos-theme
To be upgraded
plymouth-theme-pclinuxos

If I try to update then I get the sda10 message and the update fails.
If I reload Synaptic the above updates are still there.

Thanks for the explanation ......  it does make things clearer.

We need to tie down exactly where and when this strange sda10 is appearing, including the exact message/s when it does appear.

You did check your /etc/fstab file for any reference to sda10?

I guess when we can be sure where and in what circumstances the sda10 messages appear, someone might jump in with an idea.

A suggestion was made elsewhere that it may relate to a card reader on my printer, but with the printer switched on there
is still no mention of sda10

One new thing, though, when booting up for this run of xfce it booted to a command prompt and kept spinning
my hard disk.
I used startx and the usual desktop came up and the spinning stopped.
When I installed to the usb stick I told make liveusb to put grub on the stick for booting. Is this correct ?

Yes ......  and if there was anything wrong with the Grub side of things it would show when you tried to boot the OS and not just during an update which seems to be the case.

Most all your errors are connected with themes it seems to me.

Do an MD5sum check on the ".sqfs" file on the USB stick and compare it to a MD5sum check on the file in the ISO.

It is possible that the file was not copied correctly and is thus giving some errors.

Have you tried any of the other ISOs to see if the behaviour changes?
If you have space you can just add a second version of PCLOS to the same partition on the USB stick.

Doing so would help narrow down the error a bit more .......  is it only apparent in the XFCE ISO?

You are using this iso; correct?

pclinuxos-phoenix-xfce-2010.12.iso

Nice to know I am not the only one :-)

Yes I am using
pclinuxos-phoenix-xfce-2010.12.iso

I also had all of the locale error messages. I just used Localization Manager to
set my locale and they did not occur again.

As I said in a previous post, I experienced the sda10 error in an Enlightenment release,
and will now try lxde.

I suggest you try the 2011.6 test ISO to see if you get a different result.
That one will have updated packages and kernel and so is more likely not to cause such problems, IMO.

regards.

md5 results

md5 for livecd.sqfs (in iso)
830a461c1408e0274cdc9c0ae9076925

md5 for Xfce_0.sqfs (on stick)
830a461c1408e0274cdc9c0ae9076925

I tried adding lxde to the xfce on the stick. Again I had problems with the themes, but in this case
the messages from Synaptic were :

While installing package plymouth-theme-lxde-0.2-2pclos2011:

Removing PCLinuxOS theme
Cannot find a boot loader installed
error: %pre(plymouth-theme-pclinuxos-1.1.10-2pclos2011.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 21
error:   install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping plymouth-theme-pclinuxos-1.1.10-2pclos2011
Cannot find a boot loader installed
error: %posttrans(plymouth-theme-lxde-0.2-2pclos2011.noarch) scriptlet failed, exit status 21
Cannot find a boot loader installed
error: %posttrans(plymouth-theme-pclinuxos-1.1.10-2pclos2011.i586) scriptlet failed, exit status 21

Maybe would be different if only lxde on stick. I will try that next.

Thanks for the suggestion of trying the 2011.6 test ISO.
Where can I get this from ?  I cant see any mention on the PCLos site.

Will now ask on lxde forum :-(
