Sound on HP g62 laptop.
« on: June 15, 2011, 06:26:48 PM »
Is there a fix for sound that won't work on Linux, Everything works fine on Win7 but when I go to PClinuxOS i get no sound.  For some time I could hear as long as I had my earphones plugged in but now even that is gone.  Anyone dealt with that problem or something like it?

I am not much of a terminal person so I need clear instructions if you have managed to solve this type of problem.

Thanks
Mr D

Did you check the sound mixer? Make sure channels like "speaker" and "PCM" are way up.

yes, my son who is a programmer tried all kinds of things and the best that he could get was sound from the earphones.  None from the speakers.  Now even that seems to be gone.

Lets try alsaconf for you mister.dee

Open a terminal/konsole.

Type su and press enter

Now type your root password - note the characters won't show on screen - and press enter

Now type alsaconf and press enter and then press OK when the option appears.

It should now go through the procedure of checking/building your sound cards list.

If you get a few cards being shown, try one. If you don't get sound try another one and so on.

Note - make sure you don't have any sound/media related apps running when you run alsaconf

Another thing you could try is installing QASmixer - which is an alternative to KMix - and seeing if it offers anything KMix doesn't (I think it's a nice app to have installed anyway)

Are you fully updated ( rebooting or restarting can often help things along)
