ATI 4200HD sound or Intel HDA no sound on HDMI
« on: June 12, 2011, 12:40:52 AM »
I have a new fully updated PCLOS KDE-FM on a Compaq CQ62 with ATI 4200 HD graphics and sound, Manhattan 5xxxx HD Graphics
(Currently no idea if working or not), Intel HDA sound, AMD dualcore CPU anf 4MB RAM.

I want to know how to get sound out of the HDMI ports so that we can watch movies on our big TV from the laptop using VLC.
Currently Sound setup in PCC shows the ATI 4200HD as an audio device but no sound driver for it, the HDA Intel shows up fine. Phenon also reports loosing device and falling back to default.
Would I need to use the Intel or ATI sound card to get sound out via HDMI?

Thanks.

most modern cards uses a "bridge" to move the sound from the sound card to the hdmi port, this bridge is seen by all os i can remember as a extra sound card

in linux usually you have to blacklist it so you can work with it other apps that could find inconvenient the other sound card

now that i think, nobody has mentioned using it really so no idea what to do here

maybe you could tell us what kernel you have in unse there?

i'm sure you wanted to write 4GB of ram isn't?

on most amd mainboards the sound card driver is seen as intel hda but the sound card is a realtek

The kernel is the bfs one before the latest one in the repo, I tried the latest 64 kernel but graphics would not work with it no matter what settings I tried with the drivers. I have seen some things via google about getting it to work in Bent Boomerang but they called for alsa-utils and last time it tried looking for that in the repo or in bash I came up with nada. I am also not sure if the BASH commands would work using su (as they are sudo commands).
AFAIK no sound at all comes out the HDMI as system sound don't come out and ALSA mixer does not even show a channel/switch for them.
Would trying a realtek driver work?

of course commands work but you don't start with sudo

first su and write enter

then write root password and finally the real command

forget sudo

about alsautils, i remember that it is there but never used it

the hdmi just exports sound, nothing more, i don't know if there is a audio level, my hardware doesn't have

other driver, not sure what other driver is available for this sound card

I recently purchased an HP with this video card and hdmi output. Unfortunately, I only have a very old style tv, so I can't test any ideas.  :-[

HDMI is on most new DVD players, monitors and some HIFI systems. Getting HDMI to work with both Audio and Video would be great for building a media centre useing linux.
As soon as I get access to the laptop I'll try those commands and let you guys know how it goes.

Lol I have to wait until my GF is not using her laptop so I can try to finish setting it up.

Can't help with the HDMI as I don't have that video output or any device to connect to. However, as far as the alsa-utils package goes, it's in the repo. It's named alsa-utils. I could be wrong, but I think it's installed by default.

The executables provided by the package are:

/sbin/alsactl
/usr/bin/aconnect
/usr/bin/alsaloop
/usr/bin/alsamixer
/usr/bin/alsaucm
/usr/bin/amidi
/usr/bin/amixer
/usr/bin/aplay
/usr/bin/aplaymidi
/usr/bin/arecord
/usr/bin/arecordmidi
/usr/bin/aseqdump
/usr/bin/aseqnet
/usr/bin/iecset
/usr/sbin/alsactl
/usr/sbin/alsaunmute

Maybe that will help.

I think I got alsa-utils confused with asla-plugins or alsa-eq-plugin (which I have only found as a tarbal) during my initial post.
