Desktop user used to hearing steady drone of cpu and chassis fans. New to laptops and netbooks.( yes I'm about 5 yrs behind the times). I usually just assume that if the lappy isn't on fire or shutting down then all is fine.. I recall lmsensors damaging certain thinkpads several yrs ago so never really got that involved in cpu scaling/ fan cooling issues. I really don't pay attention to any of that as long as the lappy is running and not uncomfortably hot.
What is the state of affairs with linux and laptop acpi /BIOS cpu/power/cooling management today?
I have two problems:
1. Since I don't run Windows I have no point of reference to compare laptop fan speed control and related heat issues compared to running another OS.
2. I almost always use laptop cooler pads so I may be distorting my perception of what is hot/warm/cool
I have read threads here and elsewhere about fans not working . etc.(there are some threads about Insyde H2O BIOS in Toshiba laptops and fan problems). Running PCLOS 2010.12 KDE on both a Toshiba A300 series where fan runs continuously which is fine by me and a Toshiba NB305 netbook where the fan kicks in but only when warm/hot and have left both running overnight just to see but so far no issues.
Laptop mode shows checked at boot in PCC system but no t running. Another thread indicates this is for only running on battery? (currently on mains only). Sound right?
