[SOLVED] Virtualbox won't boot livecd made with PAE kernel
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:15:33 PM »
A new livecd made on this machine which passes the media check and boots just fine on this machine gives the following message when trying to boot in virtualbox:

Quote

This kernel requires the following features not present on the cpu:
pae
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU.

As can be seen from the result of running uname -a shown below, the machine is running a PAE kernel.

Quote
xxxx@asus_kde4 ~]$ uname -a
Linux asus_kde4 2.6.38.5-pclos1.pae #1 SMP Tue May 3 10:53:28 CDT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[xxxx@asus_kde4 ~]$

Is this a problem with virtualbox?

As I usually do, this is a test of running the livecd.iso file directly in virtualbox without burning a disk and then loading the disk in virtualbox.

This is using the latest version 4.0.8-1pclos2011 of virtualbox.

The system running kde was fully updated moments before creating the livecd.

Edit - check Settings - System > Processor - PAE checkbox

menotu,

Thanks, I was just posting to tell you that you had the location of the setting wrong but my short term memory sucks. When I went to look up what you wrote so that I could post a correction, I see that you already posted the correction.

Thanks again, it works so long as I select the boot to VESA option.

Great!

The PAE setting has caught me out in the past.

Whilst on that same Processor tab I believe there is an option to "add" the number of CPU's to be used - I've found that can sometimes help speed things up a bit, but conversely it can also slow things down.  But mebbe worth testing when time allows.

Note, for some chips it see's each core as separate CPU's
