Could you stil try to remove ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-alsamixer and give it a try again ?
Sorry, if forgot to mention that I already tried this last night and it didn't work.  Anyhow, I wonder if it's a problem specifically with Dell laptops and the SigmaTel sound chips that are in them.  Let me see what I can dig up and I'll get back to you.

Jeff

Edit:  Strange, gnome-alsamixer runs fine from the live cd.  But I get an error with my VirturalBox install and my Dell Inspirion 8600 install.

Edit 2:  It's a software problem.  I've found several bug reports on the WEB, howerver, no solutions.  As you know, the gnome-alsamixer program is no longer supported.

Hi Mélodie,

Other than my problems with gnome-alsamixer, I don't have any further items to report with this test ISO.  All else seems to be running fine.  I look forward to your next RC.

Hi Jeff,

I looked at gmixer for a possible replacement. Looks ok, however the package, coming from launchpad, was not updated since 2009 (we do have the last available). I am looking at another one that we don't have in the repositories : http://gtk-apps.org/content/show.php/OBmixer?content=111104 OBMixer, which has been forked recently to PNMixer. So I will take a look at PNMixer...

Hi,

pnmixer is the equivalent of volumeicon, so it's not what I'm looking for. Jeff, could you give a try to gmixer and let me know if you get the same annoyance as with gnome-alsamixer ?

There is a version 1.3 available, so we could first start with requiring an update (we have the 1.2 which works fine here and does not lack much translations).

Mélodie,

gmixer works fine in my VirtualBox and Inspiron 8600 install.  It takes time to initialize on the first run, however, after that it is fine.

Hi Jeff, then I will use it for the next version. I won't ask an update right away because I wrote a mail to the author, in order to ask if I could contribute to improve the translation : and, there is a glitch it the pot file I wanted to tell him about (swithc instead of switch)...

I'll wait a few days and if he does not answer I'll go to ask an update. :)
Anyway the version we have work, so...

A developer at Fedora is keeping apt-get and Synaptic working with the latest rpm packages. Yum and Yumex (the frontend  to yum) is similar to Synaptic. I don't think it is any faster but it does have some nice features such at the ability to view a package changelog, has a update notifier and a fast mirror plugin to automatically find the fastest mirror. The issue I have right now is the ability to generate the file lists for the repo with their createrepo package. It has a bug in it and listed on their bugzilla.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Hi Texstar,

Thanks for the information !
I guess we will continue as we do and catch the changes when they come, if you decide to switch. I suppose we might see it at the testing list when the time comes ?

Hi,

An updated version is available here:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/PCLinuxOS-Openbox

[ ]   pclinuxos-openbox-2011.06.13.iso   14-Jun-2011 12:14    644M
[ ]   pclinuxos-openbox-2011.06.13.md5sum   14-Jun-2011 12:14    67

The changes are thoses said in the posts before, radiotray, gstreamer-* needed, replaced gnome-alsamixer by gmixer, I also got rid of Java : Libreoffice seems to work fine without it... for current tasks, and all is up to date.

Thanks for testing further, all welcome !  :)

I think you are making a mistake removing java for Libreoffice. I installed it without java and when I tried to start it I got 10 popups saying no java installed. I suspect the same is going to happen to your users when the next update for Libreoffice shows up.

Hi Texstar,

I have tried with the latest and didn't get any message of this sort. Having seen that many changes had been done since the one version before, and having been said the aim of the team is to get it lighter I wanted to try.

Have you tried that with the latest 3.4.0 version we have thanks to last pinoc's lomanager ?

Of course, if the people who test report any problem while using it for current tasks (not with macros... ) I'll reinstall Java. :)

Thank you very much !
Mélodie

Hi Mélodie,

VirtualBox install up and running.  LibreOffice is running without java.  I won't be able to test a hard drive install until later today.

Hi Melodie,

gstreamer-* seems a little too big.   Only 5 needed as far as I know.   Gstreamer ffmeg, good, bad, ugly,
and base.  And the regular faac package if you ever use Clementine.   Could save a few MB's you know.
Should still play everything.

Hi !
I just meant the additional gstreamer that Kensum has pointed to. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,92334.msg775876.html#msg775876

That does not make many. Have you tried this second test version ?

Hi Melodie,

Your 06/13/11 ISO is up and running on my Dell Inspiron 8600.  So far, everything I tested is running fine.  At present, I'm listening to some classic rock with Radio Tray.  You've done a really nice job here!! ;D
