Tests for next PCLinuxOS Openbox
« on: June 06, 2011, 05:20:17 PM »
Hi,
The next Openbox version could have Libreoffice in it, use lxpanel as default and have tint2 installed in order to be activated by the users who like it better.  I will have new default applications, such as all the basics for photography, webcam, and such.

I am uploading a version for test, which will have the date of the day as a name extension. It seems to me it lacks one app (I forgot to install Viewnior that I appreciate and want to add in the Graphic section list). If all goes well, it should be available tomorrow for all who would like to give it a try.

Regards,
Mélodie

Hi Galen and Jeff ! o/ :)

I'm happy to see you here. Here is the iso : http://melodie.tyruiop.org/PCLinuxOS-Openbox

It's been quite long as my connection is not as good as it should be... called the ISP, but it's not totally solved yet, particularly for the upload rate which should be much better.

I'll be waiting for your feedback. There are already many new packages since yesterday...

And oh ! After I installed I noticed the volumeicon is mute. I had to fix it by configuring alsamixer in root console and do the "alsactl store" command after... I'll try to redo it next time, before remastering.

The machine on which I installed is an IBM T30 with 512 MB ram, GC Ati radeon mobility 7500 and wifi with chipset wavelan (driver orinoco). It seems to work fine at the moment (updating in Synaptic).

PS: Here is a pic

Please try with the updated packages. I reworked alsa setup on the livecd. You should now have a symlink called asound.state in /etc folder linked to /var/lib/alsa/asound.state which is the actual alsa configuration file. Also your volume should be set at 50% in the volume icon. At least that is the way it works on my KDE.

Tex

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Downloaded and currently running in Vbox. (download speed was pretty good - I was getting 1.2MB which is about average)

LibreOffice 3.4 is running fine.

I'll carry on giving it a run and report back if anything crops up.

Nice job Melodie!

Thank you sir !

I will for sure, within a few days. I'll wait for a few feedbacks from Galen, Jeff, Menotu, and anyone else wishing to test, and will try to work again on the PCLOS Education project in the meanwhile : reinstall, update, add a few apps and install the beautiful theme Timeth has done for it based on Ruel24's background !

Menotu : thanks !

Melodie,
I'm using Openbox live and had the sound problem. I updated as suggested. After that in the main menu I selected sound and opened the Gnome Alsa Mixer, increased the PCM/Front controls correcting the problem.
I will now install Openbox to my HD see how everything else works. Live everything I used worked without any problems. Thanks.
Alex

Hi Alex,
Welcome to Openbox testing !
The changes done in a guest account will be gone after install : the guest account is removed at post-install time. (first reboot after the install). This is why I have used alsamixer and alsactl store commands as root. But it's very probable that the updates provided by Texstar will fix it. If it doesn't it might mean that I forgot to configure it for the users, which something I can correct for next test version. :)

Thanks,
Mélodie

Hi Mélodie,

Fully updated and running in VirtualBox.  Alsa is running fine and the settings hold after a reboot.  All else seems to be working as expected.  Nice job with this!  I'll be installing to one of my other laptops next, for a full workout.
