Fix for old Ati cards under PCLinuxOS 2011 with the xorg 1.9.5

glxgears gives this

295 frames in 5.0 seconds = 58.965 FPS

vblank gives this

1941 frames in 5.0 seconds = 388.164 FPS

a little update that could help some, in my ati card i had to left system without the fix posted here but i tried xrender in kde desktop effects and some works including transparency

where are you applying "vblank" ??

after doing andy's fix I am only getting
302 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.379 FPS

That's correct Scoundrel - the FPS in glxgears should be approximately the same value as the screen frequency.

ah!! where is my head at.. I even read that in glxgears ..

the most important thing for me was that before my fix I was getting 120 FPS but games were lagging. After the fix my FPS dropped down to 60 but games / 3D effects are very smooth now. Foobilard, Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind, Quake 3 Arena. Everything is playable. On my 2nd machine with 16 MB radeon card I am able to run compiz and it's really smooth...

About the vblank option:

This gives me around 300 - 400 FPS

How are Your 3D graphics? Did You tried something in 3D?

Run this:

If the reply is

Then Your system should be 3D capable / ready. Glxgears is working so it should be peachy.

There is no indication of 3D when setting up my GPU in PCC but the 3D works like a charm.

My main machine with the Radeon card died but I suppose it did it's thing...

I think that the only "3D" in this game is the blocks layout and the shadows...
