[SOLVED] copy files/folders in pcmanfm?
« on: June 02, 2011, 12:40:19 AM »
Completely new to lxde/pcman fm. How to drag and COPY - not move files and folders. The only way I see is to open a new window and cut n paste the file/folder to new location. Otherwise file/folder is moved. Am I missing something or is this how pcmanfm works?

Went on lxde site but no info I could find.

Thanks

It's easy to copy files from one folder to another. Right click on the file you want to copy, choose Copy from the menu that pops up, then open the folder you want to copy to, right click and choose Paste from the menu that pops up. If you want to copy multiple files, left click an empty space, hold and drag over the files so that they are all highlighted, then right click and choose Copy.

Or shortcuts keys for copy on a selected file ctrl + c, and ctrl + v in a new path/directory/folder.
For move use ctrl + x

Good luck

Not being an lxde/pcmanfm user does it also work like some other File Managers whereby you can hold the Ctrl key and then use the mouse to select "individual" (noncontiguous) files?

Does Ctrl + A select all files in that folder?

And Ctrl + Shift + A to invert the selection?

akaik, Yes

Does Ctrl + A select all files in that folder?
Yes

And Ctrl + Shift + A to invert the selection?
Deselects whatever the current selection is, including a single item

akaik, only the drag/drop does not work "as expected"

Thanks tedlane

I would of been a tad surprised if those didn't work as they seem to be the norm in most FM's

I like to "invert" selection as it saves a bit of time.

Drag and drop in PCManFM moves the selection, except from root to user. You can not move a file from root to user, you can only copy.

Sorry, I am not being explicit.

You can drag (move) files within an instance of PCManFM to other visible (either in the main pane or to a bookmarked folder).  Neither shift-drag nor ctl-drag adds (afaik) any "copy" instead of move aspect.

Further, (again afaik) dragging between two instances of PCManFM only offers "move" aspect.  I don't see either of these being negative regarding the professed functionality of PCManFM.

As regards the root-to-user copy aspect, I can't comment as I've not tried it.

However, given the PCMan's philosophy of keeping it lightweight but feature rich(*) I think things can only keep getting better!

akaik, only the drag/drop does not work "as expected"

So then, what do you mean by "as expected?" That you expect to use drag and drop to copy? If so, read my previous post. It is used to move, not copy.
