Hey guys,

I know we've tried a few options but I've got another suggestion.

There is an image gallery plugin for Simple Machine Forums which means we could log into this forum and upload/view images and it would all be located right here. The only thing is that I think the images would be stored on this server which may be a problem? It has a pretty good list of features.

Yes, the problem is.. storage space for the images (bandwidth as well).  We are using tinypic, and outside storage sites to link our pics to in order to keep server space down to a dull roar here.   :o

Yeah, I thought so. I guess we have no choice but to have a separate site then. Images on another site and discussion about them on this forum. I'm sure there has to be a better solution out there somewhere....

it would be well worth the effort of installing to see if you could redirect storage off site. keeping the interface here really is is the best answer if it can be done.

Guys,
Uploading images to the forum has been disabled for a while now. This was done due to security issues.

This is true. There are no more image uploads or file attachments allowed due to security concerns.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Weric provides this goody to PCLinuxOS users. But in spite of his good intentions, his server has been susceptible to attacks. Also, users have specific storage quotas. http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,87577.0.html

And visiting Kori's and Timeth's test sites today, both were crawling but devianArt loaded first with the previously mentioned CSS disarray (a reload fixed it), cozmodesign Oops to a Google page for a reload ...

Not a good time. I think I'll reply to my emails ...

OK. I can't make up my mind whether we are stuck or have derailed ourselves. Why don't we pause for a while and take a look at what we have done so far.

.
.
.

Fast forward >> and I have narrowed down quite a bit on my own little experiments on my localhost. One, I am convinced that hosting the group's site will always be better than the free online services. Two, a gallery is good but it falls short of what I had originally envisioned. Three, from what I have tried on my localhost, I have found out a couple of things - groupware and modular.

Most groupware I have tried were overkill for what is intended for the group. I created and deleted databases, downloaded, installed, experimented and removed collab softwares, and it struck me. We didn't need features like inventories, chat, e-carts, imaps, pop3s, etc. but most of what I tested had this built in and would take Merlin Whitewolf's superior sorcery to turn it closer to the simplistic UI we've talked about. Then I noticed that some of the tools I downloaded were actually modular - stuff that we won't need are removed.

I have a couple that I will be restesting, so I am calling on you guys again. If you have installed a local server on your machines, sourceforge is a good place to start ... search for web tools that we could consider using. This could be what we are looking for.

Just to give you an example of one of the tools I will be retesting - http://www.simple-groupware.de/ - and you might be overwhelmed by all the stuff in it but picture it with most of its features removed leaving only stuff we would use.

What do you think?

Also, I also would like to reaffirm that we have agreed that the project will be offsite but request, exhibits, sharing will be in the main forum.

Interesting.  :)  I was sure there HAD to be SOMETHING that would allow us to tailor it to exactly what we needed. Especially in this day and age  ::)   Looks like you may have found it Archie. Looks good! Files, users, gallery, categories. Hopefully it will allow us to enable comments beneath images and a user/group PM system without too much trouble.

Here's the full list of features (scroll down a little)  http://www.simple-groupware.de/cms/Features

Maybe this is a possibility too > http://info.tiki.org/Tiki+Wiki+CMS+Groupware

If we're going to to do something like these, maybe it would be possible for someone (Kori  ;) if he has time) to install something like Joomla or Drupal which could easily be set up the way we need it.

Yes, Joomla / Drupal / ... do really have pluggable features...

One year ago now that I made something with Drupal (exercise for school) - but the following two weeks, I don't have much time; so choose some CMS, and see if you can reach our goals....
(everyone can do so, after installing task-lamp  ;D)

One warning: (I think it's still the same) => every extra plugin makes it a little slower, so don't throw with plugins, choose them careful  :)

Garages! How could I have skipped Drupal? And golly ... yes, we could look around for a very simple CMS and the plugins we are going to need that are available and this would be a good combination. Geez, why didn't I think of that earlier?  ::)

@timeth, I'm now downloading Tiki Wiki and will have a good look at it. Funny thing is many of these things I've downloaded and am downloading are all housed on the same SourceForge!  ;D

Drupal and Joomlah both are not as easy to work with as one might assume,,, they are a bear to keep up with security wise as well.  One comment from an outsider can inject code into the mysql db and the whole site goes up in flames.  Just my two cents.  I still think Kori gave an excellent example of what would work..  Good luck guys.  8) ;)

I have to agree with Linuxera...
=> they are not really easy (that was my experience last time with Drupal 6.x).

But I hope there's found a good solution (and please don't throw any suggestion away, which can be useful with some tweaking  :))

Oh, yeah... Joomla and Drupal just happened to be mentioned, and I don't think anyone would like to spend time on the configs, tweaks and theming. And your advice is noted. And in light of this, I think we can come into an agreement that only members can post comments while viewing the gallery (meaning every graphic files, which include modified + variants) in reduced resolution can be set to casual visitors (but members can download or view the actual sizes).

I have gone over four CMS (including SGS) and I've dumped all three except e107 (nothing to do with Enlightenment but I did thought it would). I am in the process of configuring it and looking at the plugins ... and I can say I like it. http://e107.org

It doesn't look much but so far its OK. I've tried SVG and SVGZ but they are not viewable though I got these filetypes allowed to be uploaded. More later...
