Thanks for that gracious offer, Sproggy ... let's just deep fry this idea for a bit. We don't need to get into anything that's half-cooked, and I'm sure that all of us (like myself) would like to see an effective design team for PCLinuxOS. We all want to hear what others have to say.

PCLinuxOS Graphics? "Beautification"? TEXSTAR's latest design is ...
« Reply #17 on: June 02, 2011, 01:52:01 PM »
TEXSTAR's latest design is ultimate ELEGANCE itself. End of story.

It certainly is matter of taste (some prefer NO sugar in their beer), but after many hours and DAYS trying to wriggle OUT of "fruit salad" and "busty blondes" and "beautified STUFF" faces of this  - by far the BESTest of all -  PCLinuxOS distribution I got the other day SATISFACTION.

Minimalistic, Proto-Modern meditation without any distractions. Much to the point of (MY stile of) computing.

Thank you, Texstar, U R the best, you got my loyalty forever in the world after "Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation" ...  ;D

My problem now is how to keep the resulting (a few LiveOptiDisks and LiveUSBs) safe from future "improvements" and "beautifications" with the updates and new versions?

::) Pls advise, thx, best rgds. TO

Well, I knew SkyDrive existed (and that it offers 25GB space), but I didn't dare to mention it  ::)... And about my suggestion of letting people submitting ideas for artwork... We already have something like that on this forum: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/board,53.0.html -- so I don't know if that would be OK to split up  :-\
And I think I'm going to test something at kde-look.org or opendesktop, then we know better what the (dis-)advantages are...

When do you want to have this central community place to make art? (then I know how fast things have to be tested, and researched...)
Thanks in advance!

PS: To work together VERY simplistic: http://sharedspaces.googlelabs.com/gallery/app?app_id=80001
PS: Sproggy, thank you very much for the offer - but I think it's best to take a look everywhere, so that we know the pros and cons of every possibility (or at least 'some' possibilities)

@TO: I would suggest that you open a different thread.... It's great you love the artwork - and to maintain the same piece of artwork (however, I'm sure that there will be other marvelous artwork in the future), I think you can 'stick' the packages in Synaptic, or you can download the artwork itself, save it on a trusted place, and configure it yourself when new themes arrive....
About Synaptic: I don't know how it'll work in the new package manager, that will appear within some weeks I think  :)

How about this for an idea?

I've been checking around and there's a group collaboration open source software called group server.org which is an alternative to google groups. They have a hosted online version (http://onlinegroups.net) but later this year they will start charging for private groups (I think the public groups will remain free)  But I was thinking, that if someone has some free space on their server and was willing to help, we could install the software there and run a private group. I think it's still a young project but it looks promising. The software is available for download here > http://groupserver.org

Here are the features of the software in detail > http://groupserver.org/groupserver/features/details/

Looks good!  ;)

p.s. I've got lots of time to help out with this.  :)

Good find, timeth. The software looked like something I had visualized already (except for the big photo ids) and maybe if we take Kori up on his offer now and set it up for us, we could test run the collaborative software, and see how comfortable we would feel using it. rubentje1991 is wise with "it's best to take a look everywhere..."

[EDIT]: Hmmm, the software is a mailing list and the free UI is still be on the onlinegroups.net.:[/TIDE]

Let me make this clear. Members of this group will just keep at it doing what they love to do, and is by no means will replace any of the official artwork chosen by Texstar. If I remember correctly, Texstar dipped into the the Beautification when it was still active and used some of the members' works. There are many of us (myself included) who had offered our community alternatives to the beauwontiderful artwork on the official releases. We would even splash DONATION reminders!

But the thing is, "a place where PCLinuxOS artists can call a studio" where even TO will always be able to download the themes that he like most even if future improvements wipe if clean from his /usr/share/apps/ folders. But that's for another thread.  ;)

@JohnW, maybe it was just vonskippy's right eye ... thinking monocle here.

Anyhoos, the ultimate goal is to get every veteran and budding artists in our community to this group, and let them loose.

Oh yeah, thanks in advance, "cough cough" Kori.   8)

TEXSTAR's latest design is ultimate ELEGANCE itself. End of story.

TO,

If you're talking about the theme packages, yes, Texstar is a top-rate packager. This distro has his handiwork written all over it. But, if you are referring to the pclinuxos-pulse artwork, that design belongs to Archie.

Timeth,

Excellent finding...
I suppose the mailing list worked very well back in 2009 (I wasn't active here at that time I think);
so something similar would work good again....

And maybe it's best to set up something like that on your server -- however we can also try a free temporary one on their server...

@Archie (and all others as well  :))
I've tested an artwork group on opendesktop.org
=> they are only meant for discussions I think -- posting artwork is just public, and only messages to each other can be made private....
I even don't see a possibility to link artwork to a group...  :-\ (maybe I just didn't see it, but I searched for it -- maybe there it went wrong....  :-[)

@rubentje  Ok, I started a secret group on the hosted version just so we can test it out and see if it's worth installing on Kori's server with his help. I'll email you an invitation to join. I'll also email an invite to Kori and Archie.

@Archie Could you please PM me your email address? Then I'll send you an invitation.

In that you're right, Darrel. But as much as I am getting credited for something anyone could have done, all I did was come up with the Pulse. Texstar liked it and asked if we could use it for the wallpapers he has. The first attempt was strange as a humpback on a swimming meet so a playground with the neons came as natural as a pollen's attachment to a bee. I sent Tex a few of the Pulse in different hues and he liked the one I recommended.

And this project is what it is all about. Getting it all together to make graphics for PCLinuxOS ... and there'll be stuff for everyone.

So please, I just want to make it clear to everyone. It's Tex's wallpaper, timeth's suggestion to move the pulse to the left and center "pclinuxos" ... and that's how it is done. If there's credit to be given it's to all the artists involved ... timeth, Linuzoid, Sproggy, all these guys (who are off my radar at the moment) ... they're the real heroes. Thumbs up, guys!

Thanks timeth
=> I've played a little with it...
(you'll find some posts)

Now I still need to test if we can make categories and sub-categories (wallpapers => wallpapers2011)....

I also tried to sign up, using my hotmail-address, with name "rubenTestSignUp"; sign up succeeded, but I can't access the group (that is the behavior we set up now)...
=> wouldn't it be possible to make the possible final group visible to the whole world (maybe even the content, but that depends on what the artists want) - and only let people make changes, reply, ... when they are approved by some admin?

Thanks for all work!

I think the 'categories' would just be different topics. Each topic would have a name like 'wallpapers 2011' or maybe more specific like 'Wallpaper ideas for August release'.  In each topic we would post images and files. It looks like we might not be able to have sub-categories, but we'll play around with it a bit more.  It would be better if we could have a gallery of the files/images that are uploaded. Much easier to see everything.

I have set the group to 'secre't so that only invited members can see and participate in the group (for testing purposes). We can change the privacy settings to allow everyone to see it if we end up using this software later on. But for now, lets play with it a little more....
