The simple answer is you updated some packages and not all.

PCLOS is a rolling release and part of that method is that if you wish to avoid such problems you *MUST* update the complete install regularly, and *NOT* install or update individual packages without being fully updated.

If you are unwilling or unable to maintain your PCLOS install in this manner then I suggest you need to use a different distro with a differnt method of maintenance.

well..actually pclinuxos is my first and still the only distro in my system.. :)

i know that we can't do partial upgrade in this distro..but i dont know that we must in a fully upgraded state to install an application from synaptic..
from synaptic history above the only thing i upgraded is flash-player-plugin and that didnt harm my system at all..
the problem occurs after i install qasmixer and kaconnect from synaptic and reboot the system after that..

hmm..i'm really just a noob in this guys..it's just my curiosity to know why the newly installed applications made my soundcard undetected..
if the only way out is to fully upgrade my system then of course i'll do that,, :)

i also have this notification every startup..

What response do you enter when the message appears after each boot? (when I've had it I simply press Yes, and the message disappears never to return  :D )

Do you see your sound card when you go to:

Configure Your Desktop >> Hardware >> Multimedia >
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Updating one package/app will also update its dependencies.

If other installed apps are depending on the older dependency, then those apps could 'break' ....  and would need to be updated also to work with the newer version of their dependencies.

So, yes ......  update the OS fully and keep it that way and there should be no problem that is not solvable.

No one can know what is wrong when you have some unknown mixture of packages on which applications depend .....  something *will* go wrong .......  in time if not immediately .....

just19 thx for your explanation :)

the only package that was upgraded was flash-plugin as depedency needed for kde4-config-flash..

other than that..it's just the newly installed packages..

hm..could it be the flash-plugin that made this problem??but i'm sure nothing happened after i installed it and rebooted..

Can you please describe the problem again?

What sound card/s are installed? ......  onboard?  video card with HDMI - type?  PCI sound card?  USB connected sound card?

In PCC - Hardware - View & Configure ......  what is listed under Soundcard, and when selected what is shown in the right pane for any card listed?

As much hardware info as you can muster will be helpful   ;)

Do make sure that sound is not disabled in the BIOS .....  it does happen sometimes  ;0

just19..the problem first occured after i installed qasmixer and kaconnect and rebooted..there's the notification like shown on the first post that tell some soundcards are removed..i've tried both responses (yes & no) but the same notification still shows up at every startup..there's no sound at all..and alsaconf gave me nothing..
lspci and dmesg didnt detect my soundcard either :(

it is an onboard soundcard (notebook)..PCC >>hradware>>sound configuration tells this

Quote
Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

and i dont think bios is behind this cause the sound loaded just fine on my xp

my system: latest KDE4..atheros b/g/n wifi..the rest is in my signature :D

You have not made clear what the on board sound card is, and if it is separate to the sound delivered through the HDMI output ........  and which are you using?

To be honsest if it were my PC I would install Pulse Audio and disable whichever device I was not using ... but that is me  :D

On the assumption there is a separate on board sound card to the HDMI and that is what you wish to use, then I recall a thread from Tex which went through the procedure to blacklist/disable the HDMI sound.

It seems likely that the sound is being directed to the HDMI connection and thus not heard on the other card (a guess).

Try the solutions in the following thread .....

i'm not really understand about the hardware detail..all i know that it is intel onboard soundcard..i think it's the type that came with arrandale chipset :-[

--------
i've tried the link you gave before i made this thread..no joy..
also try your suggestion to use pulseaudio..still no joy..the manager said that it couldnt connect to the hardware??

but hey i found the workaround today..i installed gmixer from synaptic and it detected my soundcard (or just the driver) perfectly..the truth is i installed every mixer found and tried them one by one ;D
the sound is just fine now  :D

clementine though still cant play any music of mine..but i can play my mp3 file from dolphin..so no need to rush for clementine right now :D

hmm..still wondering why other mixers cant detect my  soundcard though..

It is good that you have sound again .....  regardless what kicked it into life  :D

Looking at the picture you posted in the top of the thread, it seems to indicate that you have a HDMI connector (HDMI) and also separate sound (ACL888) connectors.

If that is the case then it is easy for apps to pick up the sound device which you are not using, output to that, and so you hear nothing.

The most definite means of ensuring the correct sound sink is used is to disable to unused one.

There are several ways this can be done ......  disable it in BIOS; disable it via the device management as shown in the picture; use Pulse Audio configuration to disable it; or manually edit some files to disable it. There may be more methods too ......   ;)

The alternative to disabling the unwanted device is to give the devices priorities, pushing the unwanted one below the desired device.

Anyway, all is good for the moment   ;D

britz,

My onboard sound chipset also uses the snd_hda_intel driver. I, too, installed the qasmixer package on all three computers here at home. I have had no sound problems from any of them. And the qasmixer package is still installed and working fine.

As Just19 says, the problem did not come from the packages you installed. The problem stemmed from the fact that you are cherry-picking what you install, and not doing periodic full updates. Also, as Just19 said, if you want to use this rolling release distro and keep potential problems to a minimum, do full updates. It's just that simple.
