Haven't tried LiveUSB yet but have used universal installer for other OS's and it seems that yes it installs the live version of the OS with persistance in that it saves most changes.  But is it possible to actually do a full install of pclinuxOS on a USB drive?

Hello all, first of all thanks for all the good info in this forum. I've been interested in a live usb for a while and have had virtually no success until I read this forum. I travel a lot and carrying a USB is nice as compared to my labtop. I followed the instructions in the forum described above, and was able to create a bootable USB with pclos LDXE. I am happy about this. Surfs fast and plays movies off the net very well. My problem is that it now seems only capable of behaving as an iso. I like how it functions as it loads a lot faster than from the iso CD. My desire is to have LDXE on the USB as a normal OS in that I can download and store files etc and do all the other normal functions.  Not a computer geek, but loading the OS into RAM seems to be a good thing and it would be nice to keep that function. I want to be able to keep libreoffice files  resident on the bootable USB, be able to set up the firewall etc. I did not partition the USB. It is all one big ex3. If I have to start over with a new USB, no problem as I bought the one that I'm using for $12 US. It's  8GB SanDisk. Again, Thanks.

The main reason that a 'live' session is used on a USB stick is to reduce the writing to the device, which has a limited number of writes it will sustain.
A standard 'live' session is not capable of retaining any changes.

There is then a full install, which installs to the USB stick in the same manner as it does to an internal HDD.
That has the effect of issuing lots of writes to the device which has a tendency to shorten its life.
This install can be done using the normal PCLOS installer.

There is an internediate situation, referred to as persistence.
That gives the 'live' session the ability to retain changes and to store files from one session to the next.
It requires that you boot using the 'persistence' mode each time.
Should you boot from the standard boot option then you will not see the changes that have been stored, but they are still there for the next time you boot with 'persistence'.

You can also get small USB harddrives (not flash based).  I'm using one of these, and it works really nicely.
Portable system, updatable, etc, etc.

May be able to find large capacity ones, now.  They do not need anything other than the USB cable, so they're pretty compact...
