Andy,

I have a Canon PIXMA IP3000 and Canon PIXMA MP500 (multi-function).

Both print directly to CD/DVD surfaces beautifully.

I think in The States most Canon PIXMA's do not ship with
the print tray and has a plastic insert blocking the tray slot. I think there
is some patent issue. Interestingly, I live in Australia and both came
with print trays and no insert.

The plastic insert can be easily removed and instructions to hand
build servicable print trays can be found on The Net or purchased
from eBay.

As far as software, I am a big fan of TurboPrint.

It is pay software, however is of great quality. It offers windows-like
control over the printer and has out-of-the-box Gimp integration.

I use Gimp to do the actual printing.

Regards,

AussieBear.

AussieBear, thanks for the info.  I'll also look into Canons to see what they're selling currently and how easy it is to print CDs.

Thanks again,

Andy

+1 for the Canon Pixma range.  I use them from the 4600 up to the old 5300's and all print cd's very nicely.  I push sometimes up to 200 at the time through them and they take it without a hitch.

aplumlee & longtom, thanks for the updates. It seems that Epson and Canon are the favorites, but Canon doesn't seem to support CD printing in their USA models, or Linux for that matter. Some people manage nonetheless.

I had a Canon scanner that was basically unsupported in Linux according to the Sane database. I emailed Canon and got a canned response that Canon does not support Linux.    :(

I got all me canon drivers from canon asia so far.  http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/?personal

They appeared to have the most Linux drivers for printers I use(d).   Sometimes they aren't any and I have to use a canned (virtual)  Windows to print on cds .
