Toshiba satellite Chicony webcam

PCLOS 2010.12 upgraded to KDE4.6.1 on Toshiba A305 w ChiconyCNF7051 integrated webcam shows supported and I believe uvcvideo in kernel. No external switch I can see unless some key combo but nothing in the Toshiba manual.

I do have /dev/video0 owned by root but followed a howto to set permissions to 666
dmesg | tail shows no webcam

tried adding user to video group
tried VLC capture device but says "Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'v4l2://webcam'. Check the log for details."

enabled log in preferences but can't find log

If I tinker w/settings in VLC no error but nothing happens.

dual boot w/Pinguy (Narly Nachos) - webcam works.

Any ideas?

If you checked View > Add interface > Debug logging, I believe the log can viewed at Tools > Messages.

Is there an app I can use without signing up for some account?

[UPDATE]; VLC in Pinguy OS does NOT work. Same error. I can't remember what I did in PG but it was working although grainy and audio out of sync.  I'm just testing this for nephew. I haven't invoked skype ( no account). must have used something else. maybe from CL? I'm just testing PinGuy for nephew as I don't use any kind of media communications and don't know anything about it.

the kernel you have is the oldest

newer kernel could help you for this

about the camera, vlc is not friendly with the camera

amsn has a test mode to verify camera

there is a post we mentioned multiple programs to capture images or record video directly, the post could be mine, can't remember right now

i've exactly the same cam on my toshiba and it works perfectly (i've the latest kernel... but it worked ootb with earlier kernels)
try it with wxcam (ii is in synaptic if you don't have it installed).

wxcam did the trick with video but no audio:

error cannot open /dev/dsp

changed permissions on /dev/dsp and user is member of audio in /etc/group but still no joy

fuser -v /dev/dsp returns nothing

as i don't the webcam to communicate i hadn't noticed there is no audio.
googling for a solution it looks like a problem with the mic...
