[SOLVED] add distro to grub
« on: May 23, 2011, 09:34:17 AM »
testing pclos2010.12 and pinguyOS for nephew on satellite A305 Disk - WD 320gb

Used Pinguy gparted first to setup partitions for itself since I never used gparted before. I wanted pinguy on a 20 g part at end of disk. ( have no good reason why)
Then installed pclos w/drakinstaller onto rest of disk and added a /var (like to cache downloaded software) and a separate /storage, so disk looks like this:

Beginning of disk:
sda7(15gb) - pclos root
sda8(4gb) - pclos swap
sda9(15gb) - /pclos var
sda 10(90gb) - /pclos home
sda11(155gb) - /common storage to be accessible to both OS
sda5(10gb) - /pinguy home
sda? - pinguy swap
sda1(12gb) - /pinguy root
end of disk:

I think I missed opportunity to add pinguy to boot options during pclos install so now have to add it to GRUB. Was used to LILO back in the day. Can I not just open PCC, go to boot and add sda1/boot/vmlinuz-pinguy to options  or do I have to alter menu.lst which I have never done?

Thanks for any help.

Does the other OS use Grub1 (legacy) or Grub2? coz that can make a difference.

You could try booting the PCLinuxOS LiveCD and running Redo MBR
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Let me give the LiveCd a shot. These are both fresh installs so no worries.

Thanks

[UPDATE]: Redo MBR in additional software picked up the other OS and added it to list. Didn't even have to use LiveCD.

That was too easy! Didn't learn anything! Going to see if I can mess it up just for practice.

Thanks
