blank windows after recent update [solved]

I messed up my system and recovered back.
After reboot, I ended up in command-line and running startx failed.
I executed following commands and rebooted again to write this reply.

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
shutdown -r now

I know this is not going to help you but,,

The proper procedure requires that you keep everything current. That means "latest ISO and a full update" following the instal, then regular updates to keep the OS current and in working order.

If you are doing something with an old version that was not kept up to date, I would recommend you backup all of your personal data to an external disk, install the latest ISO of your choosing, do a complete update and then restore your data.

Then, do regular updates and enjoy.

You may be able to use the updated FX driver for that card.  PCC >> Hardware >> Configure VideoCard and choose NVidea FX series, follow the prompts > reboot.  After reboot PCC Configure VideoCard will show the GeForce FX series module in use.

I do have the installation up to date. I frequently go to synaptic and apply are updates.

Let me try the options mentioned by omskates and post a reply on how it goes.
