Hi,
I am trying to compile the Heimdall tool (available here https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/Heimdall/tree/v1.1.1)

I have got it to the stage of compiling the Heimdall tool, but it seems to hang while updating the /lib/udev file. The line is ¨sudo service udev reload¨, but that comes up with a link to the available options for the service commands. I really am operating well beyond my level of expertise here, but I want to remove the bloatware from my new phone/tablet.

I did a search but have yet to find anything that could help me. Of course not fully understanding how all the files fit together does not help too, but I seem to be getting there slowly....

regards Doug
ps: the only rpm I could find was for Mandriva, but there were too many dependency issues. We already have the libusb-1.0, so half the compile job is done.

 Hi,
I have done some more work, & think I have found a patch that will work with PCL. I am not a programmer, so I am not sure exactly how it works, so would love some help. The patch is here:

http://gpo.zugaina.org/app-mobilephone/heimdall/Dep#ptabs

The patch is written for Gentoo, but has dependencies that will work with PCL.

By the way, the actual original Heimdall program compiles & loads, it is only the patching of the Udev file that fails. The other issue is that the USB driver is not found, because it expects it in another location. Judging by the number of reads of this post, I think there may be a few that would like to hack their Android phones.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is good value at the moment: $Au299 (about $US280: how things change: I remember not so long ago when $Au1=$us1.20) in Australia from Telstra. Hacked they are reputed to work very well. (Bit stuttery standard because the file system is slow: fixed by formatting to Ext4.)

We don't use sudo and strongly recommend against it because of security risks. That's your problem. We use su. Sudo can be installed, but use at your own risk. Perhaps you can modify the file to use su.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

Hi,
when I tried to compile the tool, I did it as su. I got no error (that I could see) about sudo: would the system have ignored it?

This is really well beyond my expertise.

I understand & appreciate the disabling of SUDO. I hate security flaws too. That is one reason I do not use that other well known OS.....

We always strongly recommend to install from the repositories.  At least those packages we know about (i.e. we know what goes into them).

Here, I'll try to build the program and get it into Tex's hands.

I hope this is someting that has been tested well. I don't want to put something in the repo that could brick your Galaxy Tab.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Here's a similar question, from their FAQ page:
Quote
Is Heimdall safe?
No matter what method you chose, flashing firmware onto your device has a lot of potential for disaster. We have tested Heimdall with a variety of devices, flashing several different firmware versions with a 100% success rate. As such we believe that Heimdall is generally reliable. However keep in mind, just like any firmware flashing software, Heimdall has the potential to brick your device if not used correctly.

If you want I can just upload the RPMs for consumption by just the people in this thread.

Yes, I think you are right: the package could perhaps stay in the developers section. Then it is the user beware.

As far as the ´Bricking´ goes, there is always an element of risk associated with reloading these devices. But the upside is that success gives a better device, and all the carrier bloatware can be removed. When you reload the roms, you reformat to ext4, which apparently makes the file fetches much faster. I am really looking forward to trying it out. (Cheap colour eBook reader, GPS, & phone/data capabilities as well: now $Au 299)

Much thanks, Doug

Hi to all the wonderful people @ PCLinuxOS, Thank you. I installed the tool tonight, & will report on its success when I use it.

Thanks again, this is why I love Linux.

Tried this one on my Samsung Galaxy S2 seems this version does not support it you need the later 1.3.0 version of the program for it to work apparently.
