blank windows after recent update [solved]
« on: May 22, 2011, 09:28:38 PM »
Hi,
I think its after one of the recent updates (probably in the last one week).
When I open some applications, I see the window being blank (white) except title bar.
The window content will show up if I reduce the window size below a particular resolution.
If I increase the size, it will change to blank window.

The applications I have noticed this behavior are open office writer, synaptic package manager, Gwenview, Konsole.

Did anyone else faced this issue?
Is there anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks

when asking for help you must add as much information as possible

video card you have, driver in use

desktop you use, kde, gnome, others

if you use kde are you using kde desktop effects or compiz

more info please

Hi T6,
Thanks a lot for the quick response.

video card is "nvidia Geforce Go 6150"
I dont know how to find the driver in user.

I am using kde with all the latest updates installed with compiz.

Just now noticed, it happens in open office calc occasionally.
Thanks

oenoffice?

libreoffice

are you completely updated?

have you played with the compiz settings?

we need to be sure what video driver you use and what video card you have, if oyu have a geforce go 6150 that sounds like a laptop

you might need the right nvidia driver form synaptic

I user openoffice.

Yes, I am up to day completely. I use PASS.

No, I didnt change any compiz settings recently.

How do I identify the driver being used?
How do I know which one is the correct version?
Thanks

How do I identify the driver being used?

Open PCC. Click Hardware in the left panel and Configure Video Card in the right panel. Click the top button (Graphic Card). The driver installed should be NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and later. If it's not installed, select that driver and click OK. Follow the prompts. If you change the video driver from what it is now, close all windows and reboot before doing anything else.

If you are "truly" up to date, you should be using Libreoffice.

How do I identify the driver being used?

Open "Configure Your Computer" click on "Hardware / Brows and configure hardware" in the list open "Videocard" and click on your card. The driver is listed as "Module" at the bottom of the Information page.

How do I know which one is the correct version?
Thanks

For an nVidia 6100, I think the correct driver is "Card:NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and later".
In sysnaptic it is listed as "dkms-nvidia-current"

Hope this helps.  ;)

This may be a driver problem. I had black screens and ended up downgrading my driver to fix it. You might try that and see if it works. I had to downgrade in synaptic the x11 driver and then the dkms-nvidia-current driver. Just search in synaptic for nvidia and you will see what I mean.

Thanks a lot everyone.

First, I went to PCC and made sure driver "NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and later" is installed.

Second, I checked synaptic to see all updates applied. Still LibreOffice not installed in menu.

Third, I noticed LibreOffice manager and installed LibreOffice using that. Same issue with LibreOffice window.

Last, I downgraded x11-driver-video-nvidia-current and dkms-nvidia-current, restarted.

Now all applications are good (office, konsole, synaptic).

Thanks again guys!!!

Sorry to hear you're one of the unfortunate ones whose nVidia driver update isn't working. But I'm glad to see you were able to use some deductive logic and arrive at a solution. Good for you!

Hi All,
I started getting this problem again.
Looks like I accidentally moved to the latest version.
Now I could not find the old version and the force version is disabled in synaptic.

Is there any other way to go to a previous version?
Thanks

Can I download the source of the previous version and compile?
Can someone point me to the source?
Thanks

Here is what I did. Not sure if this is going to solve the problem.
I will post another reply after a reboot. Hope I have not messed up my computer.

Downloaded older rpms for the above mentioned packages at
http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/14918426/dir/pclinuxos/com/x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-260.19.29-1pclos2010.i586.rpm.html

http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/14918422/dir/pclinuxos/com/dkms-nvidia-current-260.19.29-1pclos2010.i586.rpm.html

opened konsole and logged in as root and executed below commands
rpm -e --nodeps x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-280.13-1pclos2011.i586
rpm -i --force x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-260.19.29-1pclos2010.i586.rpm
rpm -e --nodeps dkms-nvidia-current-280.13-1pclos2011.i586
rpm -i --force dkms-nvidia-current-260.19.29-1pclos2010.i586.rpm

I am able to see older versions in synaptic
