The access point part will read "not associated" when you are not connected to any access point.

You change the channel on the wireless access point. Go your wireless router configuration area and there should be an option to change wireless network channel. Your computer will automatically switch to be access point channel when you connect to it so no change is necessary on any of your computers.

Most frequently used channels are 6 and 12(i think), just pick any other and see if it will make a difference.

Sorry for sounding a bit dim but where is the wireless access point? In PCC/Hardware/Browse and configure hardware? I can't see any reference to channels there. ???

Maurice,

You have to set the wireless channel number used in your router. Each router model is different, so don't know which pages you should look at, other than the wireless section of your router settings.

Bare metal                           VBox
AMD Athlon 7750 Dual-Core    Single core
4GiB RAM                              1GiB RAM
nVidia GeForce FX 5200          64MB video

This is usually done through a web browser and using an address like 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. You'll have to look up your particular routers documentation for this. Somewhere there will be a setting to configure channels...

cheers,

"wireless access point" or simply "access point" is your wireless router. It is not on your computer, it is a device that is the source  of the wireless signal and it is the device that is connected to your cable modem. I should have said "go your router and change the channel". Sorry is my use of "access point" confused you.

You usually gain access to it by typing its IP address on the web browser. The address is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1

Each router is different and hence its hard to tell you exactly where to go to look for the setting but it should be somewhere there.

What router are you using? linksys or?

Gee, thanks a lot for all these replies. I'll work on them after dinner. ;D

In the meantime I went to /etc/init.d/network restart and got this --

[root@localhost maurice]# /etc/init.d/network restart
Shutting down interface wlan1:                    [  OK
Shutting down loopback interface:                 [  OK
Bringing up loopback interface:  127.0.0.1
squid (pid  3057) is running...
Reloading Squid
                                                  [  OK
Configuring wireless regulatory domain            [  OK
Bringing up interface wlan1:  Error for wireless request" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan1 ; Invalid argument.

Is there anything useful there?

your wireless interface just gave an error when you attempt to restart your network. Why did you restart your network?

Restart your computer, and try to connect again and see if you will get those authentication time outs.

Try to deal with one problem at a time, now we are working under an assumption that the problem is due to the wireless interference, change the channel and try to see if a different channel will solve the problem or not. You messing around with your wireless card could unnecessarily complicate things.

Sorry muungwana. :(

I tried both 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 and both timed out. My router is 2wire and card is linksys.

I switched off both router and computer and tried again but no joy. Still got the authentication time outs but the output was somewhat different --

how did you set a password on your router for the wireless network? The option to change the channel should be somewhere there.

Check your router manual to see how you can gain access to it and how to change its settings.

Not sure what you mean how did I set a password on my router. I don't have a manual but I went to the 2wire web page, reset the router to its original settings and I've actually managed to get a connection.  ;D

I'm not suite happy with the original settings as it was set back to its original name (Bigpond1132) my previous ISP, who supplied the router in the first place. The name it has had since  I changed ISPs was 2WIRE132.

Hope you can understand this - it's the best way I can explain it.

It's a relief to be back online. Many thanks for sticking with it muungwana - you must have gone way past your bedtime, and to all the others who chipped in.  ;D

The above quote says the access point name is "2WIRE132" and the wireless network is protected with an encryption key "8005-5099-71". Somebody had to set these two and there has to be a mechanism you can use to change them.

If you set it to its original setting then it has its original password?

If it works then it works but i would advise you to look into gaining access to the router and look around for various options. Using default options is not good for your security

Oddly enough it has somehow gone back to 2WIRE132 and now both my desktops have a connection. However I shall go back to 2wire.com and, as you say, have a good look around but be a bit more careful in setting things back to default or original.

Maurice,

Look on your router to find the manufacturer's name and the model number. Many of the router manuals can be found online for download. You really need a manual for future use.
