you can paste the contents in here ... put it between the code tags ... i will test on a test install ...

The forum software doesn't seem to let me post the list here.
Just to also mention that my Phinx install doesn't have the problem, nor does running from the live Phoenix cd as I mentioned before.

Re-did the test again last night, and replicated the problem exactly (xterm was fine, terminal emulator spiked CPU to 60%).  Tonight I will try disabling some XFCE widgets one at a time to see if I can locate the problem from that perspective.

Interestingly, changing the Xterm emulator background from the default transparent background to solid colour makes the CPU use drop from 68% or more to around 20%

Again, the same for me. Disabling the transparency drops my X CPU usage from 90%+ to 40%+.

I'm not sure it's widgets. there was an Xorg update recently and Tex has said on the twitter feed that it caused some problems and that he is testing a earlier Xorg version. I think it is either that or an update to the Terminal Emulator itself causing the problems.

Sproggy - I can't post the Synaptic Markings log - probably too large for the forum. Have put it online HERE
Intel P4 2GHz, 768 MB RAM
GeForce4 Ti 4600
PCLOS Phoenix 2010, fully updated

I had not had the problem until I ran the radio widget, then it ran at close to a hundred. I quit it and now it is running normal again.

That would make sense.  I am also using the nvidia driver.

I hope the heavyweights can get wayland working soon.  X needs to go.

Not using the nVidia driver on this machine - it is a laptop and uses the SiS driver.

what version of XFCE are you using??? im on 4.8 and dont experience any of these issues ... i can see that you have alot of QT libs ... i would advise removing them and test to see if you still get the issue

version 4.6, the standard one installed with the current Phoenix iso.
My EeePC uses 4.8 - which is the default with Phinx as you know - and has no problems at all.

Presumably the QT stuff came when I installed VLC, but I also have VLC on my Phinx machine with no problem...

Think I will set up a VM and see if that is the issue.

i would advise updating to 4.8 ... open synaptic ... goto settings ... repositories .... scroll to your preferred repo .... in the sections add xfce4 ...reload ... and mark all upgrades ... this will update you to 4.8 ... you may find that your panel launchers add additional entries they are easy to remove through the panel properties ... it will also reset your default theme

The upgrade seems to do the trick regarding the CPU use problem with a terminal!

Just a word of advice for anyone following the suggestion to upgrade to 4.8 - it set my NumLock to On once I had logged in to the new desktop (a problem which we picked up with the RC version of Phinx, which also uses 4.8)

Will give the system a workout for a while and keep an eye on things - but looking as though the issue is fixed by upgrading.

Upgrading did the trick for me. Launch terminal emulator with a transparent background now

4.8 is definitely a little different.  The only gotcha for me is I cannot set keyboard shortcuts for window operations - I've searched everywhere.  Going to have to do some googling.

CPU going ballistic - I too have updated - problem solved. And lots of nice new goodies to play with. Thank you Sproggy. I like it. I think I'd now better mark this as 'sorted', if not actually 'solved'.
