This is interesting. Over the last few days I've noticed that every now and then (and at first I could connect it with nothing specific) my CPU usage - via Gkrellm - would rocket to anything from the high 80% to 100% when the machine is supposed to be idle. And that's on a dual-core Athlon 64 7550, each core running at 2ghz. Occasionally both cores would be at that level (though they don't mimic each other) and sometimes the load would alternate from on to the other. I tracked it down only by accident - to when I launch the Xterminal emulator. As soon as I do that - whether I enter anything into the terminal or not - one or other, or both of the cores shoot up to those levels. As soon as I dismiss the terminal, they immediately fall back to normal.

That's all if I launch the Xterminal emulator. If however I use Xterm itself instead - all works as it should. No rocketing cores. This is hardly a problem as all it means is when I use the command line (says he, like he knows all about that, but he doesn't but can use it fairly simply) I use Xterm and not Xterm emulater. But does anybody have any idea why this would be? Does it point to any potential problem?

what you need to do in the terminal is run top and see what is eating up your CPU .... maybe you have something else installed like gkrellm thats causing the issue

Sproggy - OK I launched Xterm emulator, entering nothing after the prompt. Immediately one core went to over 90%. I then launched Xterm   by the side of emulator, and in Xterm ran top. The answer was there - X is the source of the problem. While I watched it was taking consistently 100% of the CPU. I then quite Xterm emulator and in Xterm watched the result in top. X's use of the CPU dropped within a second or so to 1%! What does that tell you?

Me too...

I'm getting exactly the same symptoms. Running 'top' in Xterm shows X at <1% CPU. As soon as I start Xterm emulator, up it jumps to 90%+

Closing down the Xterm emulator makes it all normal again.

I'll update and see if this changes. I know there have been some Xorg updates recently (as notified in the Twitter feed), but I've not updated for a week or so.

can not replicate this under KDE/FM, I can run 5 xterms and Konsoles and X is at 1%...
Since this is posted here is that XFCE-specific? Can you duplicate this issue on a fresh user-account or different DE?

I am on XFCE normally (Phoenix edition). Just did a full Synaptic update as mentioned above (which included an Xterm update).

Then I created a brand-new user and logged in as that user into a KDE session.
I got exactly the same symptoms, except that the CPU usage went to about 40-45% with the Xterm emulator, returning to <1% when closing it.

Logged out and logged back in as that new user to an XFCE session. Exactly as my original post, CPU at 90%+ when opening Xterm emulator, returning to <1% when closing it.

It's a mystery to me... but I'm happy to do any further investigative work that is required.

I can add a +1 to this particular issue. CPU use seems to rocket when a terminal is opened - and the culprit is X according to top.

Interestingly, changing the Xterm emulator background from the default transparent background to solid colour makes the CPU use drop from 68% or more to around 20%. Drops further to 2% or so after a short time.

Likewise, happy to test/investigate.

Interesting, this is also an issue on my box.  Opening with the icon-shortcut (exo-open) works fine, but then when i launch xterm directly from the command line my cpu goes to between 50-60%.  I then have to kill the terminal itself in addition to the xterm window to get it back to normal.

So, besonian, I have the exact opposite problem that you do.  Works fine with the emulator, but Xterm spikes my cpu.

It will be nice when X can finally be replaced.

I'm away from my Xfce machine at the moment so can't add anything more to this from that point of view. However, I've done an experiment on this Gnome machine (Dual core Sempron 3800+) on which there are four terminals. Again xterminal emulator (and none of the other three) whacks the CPU usage up on both cores. Not so much as on my Xfce machine, but hovering around 40%. And via top, the culprit again is X. So the problem doesn't seem to be entirely confined to Xfce. As I said before, it's not a problem as there are alternatives. Very curious all the same.

i have not experienced any of what you have spoken about on either Phoenix or Phinx ... running xterm or terminal ... both run using minimal amount of CPU ... i would suggest at maybe checking for your baggage you have picked up along the way ... you know ... those must have apps with way too many dependencies from any and every available DE ... this isnt XFCE specific ... as this has been seen on Gnome also i would say that there are conflicting issues here ... if you can all give me a copy of your Synaptic MArkings i will be able to tell you exactly why this occuring

After seeing Kori's post, I booted from a USB stick with the Phoenix live iso installed on it - and no problem with X cranking up the CPU when a terminal or the terminal emulator is fired up. So that does suggest a conflict with something we have added.

I tried saving the markings in Synaptic, but I don't seem to be able to do so.... I will see if I can find a way around that.

Sproggy - I'm going to sound like a noob here - but what are my Synaptic Markings? Once I know what they are I'll post a copy.

None of us are experts in everything. There are some subjects on this forum I'm just lost on. But, I do know this one. Start Synaptic. Click File > Save Markings As. In the requestor window, pick a folder and give it a file name.

EDIT: Click the "Save full state" box.

Ah - that also solved my query about saving the markings. Must remember to tick the Save Full State box!

Kori - how do you want the file sending?
