SOLVED! Photo Programme for Phoenix

I see via a search that there are 3 or 4 threads about finding a photo viewer/photo programme for Phoenix/Xfce. I even started a couple of these threads last year with no success. I'm looking for a "digiKam" type programme that will run in Phoenix/Xfce. I realize that there are no specific programmes of this type for Phoenix/Xfce and that's sad. I'm not a great photographer but do like to work with the few photos that I make, especially now that spring may be arriving here in the far north...

I'm running Phoenix 2010.12 on a 5 + year old laptop, 1 GB RAM. I've used F-Spot in the past with another OS and it was OK. It will install (I think) on Phoenix but doesn't run. I've tried Shotwell but it, too, will not run. Ristretto, GPicView and others suggested in the threads here appear to be just viewers that show up about 2 1/2 mm square on my screen. Too small to do anything with. The GIMP will load them individually and save them individually and that's OK for those photos that have been "adjusted" and saved. (All the viewers/programmes were loaded via Synaptic. Most of them had very few or no additional files offered/listed/downloaded...)

It would appear that Phoenix/Xfce is not the specific OS for me to use when working with photographs. I'm not really a KDE fan -- my system doesn't really like it (or maybe it's me and my system...). Should I be using (the very dark) Gnome? LXDE? Something else?

Suggestions would be very helpful.

For my photo library I use Picasa, I don't know if that would help you or not.

Thanks charsan2. I've seen a reference to picasso in other messages and have had a brief look at it. For me, it doesn't appear to do what I would like it to do.

I will be checking out PCLOS Gnome as I've used Gnome for the past two or three years with another OS. However, it's list of "Highlighted Applications" from PCLOS' home page provides gthumb, a "Graphic Viewer Client", which wasn't in my last go-round with Gnome.

This is a challenge, eh?

You might go into Synaptic and see if libmono0 is installed... I had to install it separately for F-Spot to work.... and I use xfce on both my machines. F-Spot, gthumb or Mirage might be worth exploring.

@Meemaw: Found "libmono0" in Synaptic. F-Spot now opens and runs. Unfortunately it's not my favourite programme but it's running. Is there a missing "lib" file or something that prevents Shotwell from opening? Shotwell is on my Graphics menu in Phoenix but has no icon and will not even try to open. Synaptic provides only the programme name and doesn't offer any other "lib" or similar to include with the download. This is what happened with F-Spot. It was a single file download appearing in the menu without an icon, until I added "libmono0".

Will download and try Mirage later today. Hopefully it is a complete download...

@joec: The GIMP has been with me since I first started using Linux in 2007 (with PCLOS) but I haven't really learned what it does and how I make it do what it can do. Thank you for the pointer to "meetthegimp.org" and suggestion to "look at Darktable". I'm curious as to what a "Darktable" is. I'll check it out later today or this evening.

"ristretto" (as well as "gthumb") gave me about 2.5 cm square (I'm Canadian, eh...) or one inch square spots on my computer screen. I no longer have either installed, hoping to work with Shotwell or, if necessary, F-Spot to download my photos in the "Photo" (a.k.a. "Pictures") folder.

no issues with F-Spot here ... have you made sure you have fully updated your install??? ... open synaptic ... click reload ... the mark all upgrades ... then apply and apply again ... then reboot ... then reinstall F-Spot through synaptic ....

Thanks Kori however F-Spot is working very well. It's Shotwell that will not work. I can load it from Synaptic, it appears to install but will not run. I have "Shotwell" shown in the Phoenix Menu under Graphics but it has no icon. When I click on it, nothing happens. The mouse cursor is just the usual arrow rather than the two circling balls that indicate the programme is loading.

Therefore, my concern it to have Shotwell (if possible...) rather than F-Spot. I used an older version of Shotwell before moving back to PCLOS and found it better for me, personally. If there's a situation with Shotwell, I'm not aware of it at this time.

Except for the photo programme quirk, I'm enjoying Phoenix. It's quick and everything else I've tried in the OS works well for me.

I update the install via Synaptic at least weekly and will do it again this coming weekend.

reinstall librsvg2 ... this will resolve your issue ... i am looking at repackaging it and forcing it to reinstall librsvg by default

Thank you. Installing "librsvg2" worked like a charm. Shotwell is up and running along with importing the photos from F-Spot.

I can now consider this thread as "Solved" and have marked it to indicate this.
