[SOLVED]Still no sound with 2.6.38.6
« on: May 16, 2011, 09:23:59 PM »
I have a no sound issue with my Asus F3KA using any of the 2.6.38.3,4,5 kernels.  Sound works fine with 2.6.33.7 kernel. I tried solutions that were posted in this thread: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,90884.0.html

I have now installed the 2.6.38.6 kernel and still have no sound. So I did some more looking around and I have noticed that the PCM slider is not present in my mixer controls under the 2.6.38.6 kernel, but is present with the 2.6.33.7 kernel. Could this be the problem and if so, how do I fix it?

I'm using the latest KDE 4.6 and the sound driver is snd_hda_intel.

Did you had a look at settings > configure channels in Kmix?

MerReady, why are you trying a different kernel? Any special reason why you would need to use a different one? If 2.6.33.7 works, why not stick with it?

I have noticed quite a speed-up with the 2.6.38 kernel and 2.6.38.6 contains the bfs version 0.401 of which Con Kolivas says you will notice a speed increase on laptops.

So, there IS a reason to try new kernels, not only to solve hardware issues.

MerReady, did you run alsamixer from a terminal to turn on PCM?
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Yes I have. A number of times and it didn't help. The good news is I got it fixed and the problem was in configure channels in Kmix. Let me explain.

I was thinking about bicol_willem question about checking Kmix, in which I have checked many of times. That's how I found out that PCM was missing from the 2.6.38.6 kernel kmix settings. So I decided to uninstall and reinstall the 2.6.38.6 kernel just to see if anything would change in Kmix. Well something did because now Speaker Channel was listed under Available Channels. I highlighted Speaker and dragged it to Visible Channels and viola I have sound. So it looks like PCM has changed to Speaker in the 2.6.38 kernel.
