(Solved)Synaptic wants to remove printerdrake

Not sure if this is the right place for this.

I am running PCLinuxOS 2010.12 on an extra machine to get used to KDE 4. I updated after I installed it a few weeks ago. Before I upgraded, I made sure to pin the printer drivers since the last time I tried it the printer stopped working after the update.

I followed Texstar's directions and created a file named preferences in etc/apt that looks like this:

Package: printerdrake
Pin: version 1.6.12-4pclos2010
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: printerdrake-common
Pin: 1.6.12-4pclos2010
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: cups
Pin: 1.4.5-1pclos2010
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: cups-common
Pin: 1.4.5-1pclos2010
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: libcups
Pin: 1.4.5-1pclos2010
Pin-Priority: 1001

Package: foomatic-filters
Pin: 4.0.3-1pclos2010
Pin-Priority: 1001

I wanted to do an update today but Synaptic wants to remove

desktop-printing
printerdrake
printerdrake-common

and some other printer related stuff

The only thing I see that is related to printers that will be updated is

task-printing
and task-printing for the various name brand printers

The printer I have is an Epson CX 8400 all-in-one. It works now, but I'm afraid it won't work after the update.

Any advice?

Thanks menotu.

That post explains the change but I'm still not sure what an update will do to my all-in-one. This printer would not work with KDE 3.5 and I was surprised when it worked on a new install of 2010.12. Then disappointed when it quit working after an update.

Did you already try the new printer system...
It is completely renewed (you'll see the difference also in PCC)...

Until now, it only lead to better detection at the computers and printers here....

Maybe, if you have done much configuration, you can try to use 'mylivecd' to make a custom OS (based on the thing you're running now), so that you can install the current version again if you're doing something wrong
(you'll find more information on the forums here)....
Then you can go ahead and try the update (however you can do it also without making the backup install-cd)

Well, I bit the bullet and did the update. The all-in-one still works ;D

So now you're (still) happy  :)
(but you still maybe want to look at the changes in PCLinuxOS Control Center >> Hardware >> Printer, etc.)
