But by opening mediaplayer (e.g. vlc), you can use the open-file dialog, and when you hover a file with your mouse there, it will be played automatically (I know it's not that easy; but normally you're looking to play a file, and first opening a media player is not wrong)

Strange they did implement it in save/open-dialogs, but didn't gave it as an option in Dolphin...  :-\

The information panel has a player open in it already and you don,t have to close or stop it just move to another hover spot and it stops playing mp3 or vid.  hover the meta info changes in the information panel - click play and if you move over another file it stops and changes the info again.

It's only a pity that you can't set it up that it plays automatically (that the information pane starts playing / previewing the file when hovering)... I know some people won't like that feature - but people who want that feature should have the ability to do it
So I voted up the idea on the page I linked to in one of my previous posts  :) (by pressing the up-arrow, and by posting a comment)

I have a problem with what I have just read.  I have the latest upgrades, kde4.6.2, and I just opened Synaptic and did a reload, and said
check all upgrades, etc., and when I was done, I still didn't have any "Settings" or "Preferences" in Dolphin.  Is it possible that I misunderstand
and this is in some other desktop environment, or an earlier version of kde?  If that's the case, I must say that it's too bad that these
features have been removed.  Also, F11 doesn't do what is indicated. Ah well, I didn't know about this, so I didn't miss it before, so I guess
I can get along without it now.  --doug

OK, you're really sure you're using Dolphin, and not Konqueror for example?

kde is on 4.6.3 right now, not in kde4.6.2

the feature wasn't popular and was removed

if i remember correctly pclinux came in the past with the feature disabled and some users came to the forum asking to enable it

about the preview function we explained in dolphin you need to press F11 key, it should show a new section in the right side of the dolphin window with a basic multimedia control

if you don't see it it is possible that you need a package we already have

are you using kde full version or maybe you added kde to a gnome installation?

1.  You're correct, my kde is at 4.6.3--I didn't realize that it had moved up a notch.
2.  And yes, I'm quite sure that I was looking at Dolphin, but I also have Konqueror on the desktop, so I looked at that, and *it*
has preferences and settings, and configure Konqueror, etc.--the things that Dolphin theoretically has, but not on my machine.
I guess I'll give Konq a try.  Thanx for the information.  --doug

A bit of new information....I was watching a few streaming video files today tried to download one using download helper and again using ant video download helper (both Firefox addons). While checking my download in the dwhelper file folder I inadvertanly scrolled over a mp3 file.....I began to play!! This was all done in KDE4.5.  I closed all of my audio and video players and the circumstance continued (I could hover over any of my MP3 or wav files and they would play.  I restarted the machine but have been unable to duplicate the condition again.
In everything give thanks

Why not just install Nautilus.  It plays Mp3 previews with the mouse hover.

On another mailing list, someone wanted to install kde on an otherwise Gnome system.  He was *strongly* advised by more than one
responder to *avoid* installing Nautilus at all costs!  I don't know why, but maybe it would be a good idea to find out before you do it.

I don't know if it was Dolphin or ???, I do have Gnome as an alternate desktop on this install and was logged on for a while with that as a desktop using the hover feature.  I logged off, and back on again into the KDE desktop without a complete shutdown, but I don't know if anything used in Gnome would 'hang over' into the KDE desktop.  I'd like to know more about using Nautilus but don't want to risk screwing up my system. Can someone point me to the thread concerning nautilus and KDE?
In everything give thanks

you can use all the gnome apps in kde, also you can use kde apps in gnome

most of the apps developed for other desktops work in the other desktops

just install it
