<SOLVED> No Picture in SMPlayer
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:26:58 AM »
I have re-installed and updated PCLinuxOS and now I cannot get SMPlayer to display a picture when I play a video file.  This was working okay before I updated.

(When I call up the SMPlayer application (and before loading a video file) instead of the player's having a black screen with an SMPlayer logo in the centre, it is transparent (showing the desktop below it) with the logo in the centre.)

I have searched the forums but cannot locate any posting indicating that anyone else has experienced this problem.

As far as I know, no SMPlayer settings have changed since the update.

Both Mplayer and VLC display the video picture correctly.

I don't know what other information is necessary.

SMPlayer is my preferred video player and I am eager to get it working again, so I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

You can erase the SMPlayer folder and that will reset everything for you, you'll find it in your directory, in a hidden folder /.config. Might help. ;)

Thanks for the input.

I checked contrast and the setting is the default (i.e. mid-point).

I erased the SMPlayer folder as suggested, but this did not help.  I then did a complete removal and re-install of SMPlayer (through Synaptic).  The lack of picture remains.

Are you by any chance using compiz. If so add this line to the run cammand in your menu.       export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 &&    or at the terminal paste this with smplayer and see if it corrects the problem.

Click on Options --> Preferences

then click the Video tab. Try all the various Output drivers 'til you find one that works.

If you are using Compiz, try what kensum71 suggests.

Of what use be there for joy, if not for the sharing thereof?

Thanks old-polack, that worked.  I had observed the list before but was hesitant to play around with it, especially as the related MPlayer also had the xv driver active, and the vision was working with it.

(P.S. kensum71 - no, I am not using compiz (just kwin).

Thanks again to everyone who offered me assistance.
