I have been attempting to rectify a (no) sound problem in PCLOS and I read a thread in which someone suggested that the person experiencing a no sound problem should try a different kernel.

As this worked for him, I attempted the same.  I had been running kernel 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs and so also installed kernel 2.6.38.5-pclos1.bfs.

I am actually triple booting PCLOS, Green Salad and Windows 7, but I am using the Windows Bootloader which directs me to Windows or to GRUB (for PCLOS) or to GRUB2 (for Green Salad).

While I can still access the Windows Bootloader and can then access Windows 7 or GRUB2 (Green Salad), I now cannot access GRUB (PCLOS).  After I select PCLOS in the Windows Bootloader, I am taken to an aqua coloured screen:

GRUB4DOS 0.4.5b 2010-07-25, Mem: 638K/ 3069M/ 1024M, End: 34CA0B

linux-nonfb
failsafe
windows
2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs
2.6.38.5-pclos1.bfs

When I select any one of them and hit Enter, I am presented with the following screen:

Booting linux [linux-nonfb or failsafe or windows or name of the kernel I chose]

kernel (hd1,4)/vmlinux BOOT_IMAGE=linux root = UUID = 62ddff17-6d0c-4189-82d5-da2fb
bbe04ff splash = silent vga =700

Error 15: File not found
Press any key to continue …

Pressing any key takes me back to the aqua coloured screen.

Would someone please be able to assist me to undo the damage that I have done, so that I can access PCLOS again?

I had made an image of my PCLOS installation before I encountered this problem, so I finally decided to reinstall /boot.  (I suppose I could have done the same via the PCLOS live CD.)  This appeared to solve the problem.

The next time I attempted a reboot, I was presented with the Error 15 screen, again.

I repeated the procedure of reinstalling /boot and the problem was rectified.  I have been able to boot into PCLOS repeatedly, since then.

Unfortunately, I am none the wiser as to the method of fixing this problem from within the PCLOS install, so rather than being solved, the problem was worked around.

If it's not a typing error, the problem was that the link to the kernel is called /boot/vmlinuz, not /boot/vmlinux. Pclos uses compressed kernels. Possibly things got confused because you're using GRUB4DOS rather than the native GRUB.

You couldn't have fixed it from within the pclos install because you'd have to boot into pclos to do that...

However, you could have fixed it from a livecd or other Linux install, by editing menu.lst, or whatever the menu file for GRUB4DOS is called.
