e17 (Full version) SegFaults with BIG synaptic updates
« on: May 10, 2011, 04:28:50 PM »
I'm using KDe17 with kernel 2.6.38.3 bfs. Every time there's an update that is more than say 50-60 MB, e17 seg. faults on the installation. (i.e. like when KDE 4.6.* updates) I'm pretty sure everything is being installed, but synaptic history does not pick it up. Really annoying! Doesn't happen with smaller updates. Is there a fix for this? TIA

I don't need no steenking Windows --tuxalish

Well then boot to the console, log in as root, type apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade and finally type reboot. You got plenty of room on your hard drive? Anyway things should settle down shortly.

Yep, plenty of room on HD, only using 5 of 25 GB. I had about 65MB of updates today (5/12) and updated per your instructions "apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade". e17 seg-faulted half-way thru install but did finish install. Still no history in synaptic. Thanks for the suggestion Tex.

For the last year +  synaptic has always stopped downloading on the last 1% or so of a large update, but has always
finished OK when re-applying the operation. I only mention it now, on the off chance the behavior may be a bug
perhaps related to this segfault, instead of my usb modem, or a dogy connection. Similar sized package installation
operations on the same hardware, using various Puppy linux package manager operations, complete the first time.
