PCLinuxOS freezing after updating a fresh install
« on: May 09, 2011, 09:50:12 AM »
PCLinuxOS is freezing after updating a fresh install on an old Fujitsu laptop.

I've install PCLinuxOS KDE 2010.12 onto an old Fujitsu NSeries LIFEBOOK N5010 laptop.
It was a clean install (reformatted disk, single boot, using all defaults -- even reflashed the BIOS to the newest version).
I'm using the wireless network (-- impressed by how easy it is to setup a wireless network using PCLinuxOS.)

The system is stable if I do *NOT* do any OS updates.  But if I update the OS, then after a few minutes of use, the computer freezes -- mouse is dead, keyboard is dead -- only way to shutdown is to hold the power button for 5 seconds.

I've experimented and found that if I use the BFS scheduler (kernel 2.6.33.7-pclos6.bfs) instead of the default kernel , then I can use the laptop for a couple of hours before it freezes (improvement from minutes to hours before it freezes).  Also, the freezing occurs independent of whether I use the mouse or the mouse pad; and freezing does not depend on what application I am running.

Hardware:
 Fujitsu NSeries LIFEBOOK N5010 Laptop
 Intel Pentium 4
 2GB RAM
 ATI Radon Mobility 9600 graphics
 Atheros 802.11 ABG wireless
 300GB Western Digital Disk

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to attack this freezing problem.

I had some similar issues for a little while, once I installed the 2.38.x kernel the freezing stopped, of course ymmv.
