Compaq TC1000 w/PCLOS ?
« on: May 09, 2011, 07:51:41 AM »
Well I am trying to get a lightweight distro For a Compaq Tablet (TC 1000). The system is old and non upgradable. Is there any suggestions? Here are the specs for the machine:
30GB HD
1.0 GHz Transmeta Crusoe Proc
512 MB DDR memory
(if more info is needed check out the cnet site: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/hp-compaq-tc1000-tablet/1707-3121_7-20647257.html )

The tablet also has a 'pen' function that I would like to work if possible.

Thank for the help in advance.

Chris

i haven't heard about a crusoe cpu from transmeta in a long long time

the current kernel, not sure if comes compiled with the compatibility options for transmeta cpus enabled

i think that this is a case of load the livecd and see results

with the 512 mbs of ram, you won't run properly kde4, gnome or other lighter desktops are more appropriate

??? OK, so far I have tried Gnome and LXDE from PCLOS, and even the new Puppy(bought a mag with free CD that had the OS on it), with a bootable USB. I used unetbootin to make the USB, but nothing worked. All distros locked up after the splash screen.(puppy didn't even make it that far!!) going to see if I can get a external DVD/CD player tomorrow. Still up for any Ideas!!!! Perhaps I might have to stick to XP for this one(what a nightmare!! :'().

What kind of errors/issues are you seeing when you try to boot the live CDs?

Enter the bios and you must choose the boot from usb, the bios should allow you to boot from usb, I use pclinuxos and unetbooting smooth.

Sorry for my english.

OK perhaps I was misunderstood: I used unetbootin to make bootable USB's of the distro's. (not doing a full install as of yet, want to make sure OS works on the machine [it still has windows on it].) All of the distro's failed after the splash (PCLOS) screen. No error message, just a black screen and a cursor in the upper left. thought that the system was just slow at first, but after 15 mins still same thing. I think T6 is right, the proc just isn't supported. Will try again after finding USB CD Drive. Thanks for the help.

Have you tried other boot options (VESA, Safe boot, etc.)?

Thanks for the Idea Pags. Don't know why I didn't think of earlier, and yes it works in VESA. Not sure where to go from here....if it boots in safe mode and not in default what went wrong and where?????? by the way using gnome ISO boot. Thanks y'all for helping me though this. Do you know what video card/chipset is in this?  If it's supported in PCLOS (even if it's not being auto-detected properly), then you should be able to configure it in pcc.  If it isn't, then you're only option is to run it in VESA mode (you can install it as such, and it will remain that way).

I don't know what chip set this ancient thing uses. Do know that it has a NVIDIA GeForce2 Go Graphics Processor. How do I find out PCLOS will support this?

Not sure.

I don't think the proprietary drivers support it anymore, but the Xorg (nv?) driver does (sorry, I'm not running one at the moment...)
Might be able to drag out a laptop over the next week or so (if it's still working), and test it...

Alright Ya'll- I am back and asking more questions. After reading more than my noob brain can handle I still haven't figured all of this out.
After installing found out that the machine could not handle it, sooo finally installed Phoenix. works good but still no Idea on how to get certain drivers to work.
Would wine work to install drivers?

As far as desktops, you'll probably want to use one of the "lighter" ones, such as e17, LXDE, or IceWM. There are iso images for LXDE and e17, IceWM is in the repos, and just needs a quick installation.

As far as the nVidia driver, besides the VESA driver, the GeForce2 MX may work, or you can use the "cards not working with nvidia" option in the NVIDIA section. The pen I'm not sure about. This older article (from 2006) will at least give you an idea of the possible video capabilities and issues, although he has different hardware. This guy got Debian Sarge running on a Fujitsu Lifebook with only 128MB of RAM.

no, wine emulates windows but in the side that a app sees

the windows driver is seen by the windows kernel, the linux kernel can't do a single thing with it, linux kernel doesn't emulate anything, the only exception is wifi drivers and that is done by a module designed to do the trick

about the video card, the nv or the oldest kernel should work for you, the 93.71 i think is the oldest

you mention drivers, what drivers, please be as specific as possible, more info can't hurt anyone

hey guys-
Thanks for all your help, I am try all I can do to get this thing running, but I just can't understand it. The drivers I am really after is a pen function and a screen rotation button to work. The video card seems to be in order for now, but still can't be for sure. I found an 'blog' where someone put Gentoo on the exact same system as mine:

http://codex.xiaoka.com/~smoku/TC1000/gentoo-on-tc1000.html

Unfortunate for me, I can't decipher a darn thing this guy is talking about, when he explains on how to install the pen and such. I know that I probably bit off more than I can chew here. But hell if it was easy everyone could do it, and there would no need to learn.

If anyone can help me with little project, and maybe decipher the above web page, I would be most grateful.

Thanks again to all- Chris
