[SOLVED] KDE 4.6.3 overwriting desktop names
« on: May 08, 2011, 05:04:41 PM »
This is not a matter of importance, obviously, but it shouldn't be happening.  When I log in, desktop names are re-set back to the default names.

I've tried restoring a backed up copy of .kde4, indeed of the whole ~ directory.  I haven't tried creating .kde4 anew and really don't want to go through the laborious task of re-configuring everything if I can avoid it.

I apologise if this has already been reported.  I could not find another thread.

is this a newly updated system ??  if so ? there is a .kde4.bak file you should rename as .kde4 and on the new .kde4 should be renamed .kde4.old ...then reboot

rename .kde4 to .kde4.old first.. sorry about that..

Thanks.  I updated yesterday (May 8th) from the pass repository.  There is no '.kde.bak' file in the folder ~

EDIT: As I mentioned, I tried restoring a backup of .kde; the settings in that were also overwritten.

ternor, if I understand you correctly, you have assigned names for your virtual desktops (other than 1,2,3 and 4) under "Pager Settings" and the names are not being saved? (they return to 1,2,3 and 4).. Is this the only problem you are having?

That is the only problem I have discovered so far.  It occurred after I updated the system yesterday.

If it were me and this was the only problem I was having, I would first try to remove and then re-add the "Pager". See if that fixes anything. It wont hurt anything, that's for sure.

Good luck.

What was done was done, and I don't mean to preach how vital backups are to all of us. We should always keep in mind especially in cases of KDE updates, we need to back up the .kde4 hidden folder and also the .config (this folder is important to me). There are times these are not needed and there are times when Texstar announces the necessity for such backups. But sometimes he might forget and it is not even his responsibility to make this announcements as we should really need to understand he is very, very busy. Let's just take the responsibilities ourselves.

I just hope that others who are upgrading to KDE 4.6.3 would have the good sense to read this thread and learn from it. But obviously that is not going to happen so we just have to keep at it.

I hope you sort this small issue out, ternor, and restore your desktop the way it should be for you. Good luck.

Thanks.

Updating to 4.6.3 will not overwrite any of your configuration files in your .kde4 folder unless you are updating from KDE 4.5.x to KDE 4.6.x due to plasma desktop and package changes from the KDE developers. We won't have to do this again unless something changes again with the KDE 4.7.x serries.

With that being said it would appear to be a valid bug in KDE 4.6.3. I changed the pager text mode and renamed my 2 desktops to booger and snot and they reverted to Desktop1 and Desktop2 on the next login.

+1 "Goofy, Sneaky, Sleepy and Dork" all reverted back to Desktops 1,2,3 and 4 after a restart.

Thanks.  BTW, Archie, I had a backup.  It didn't help.

I agree 100% Archie - backup, backup, backup.

For the small amount of effort it takes in setting up some backups (to be taken daily, or weekly, or whatever to suit) far, far outweighs having to find fixes or reinstalling etc.

It seems a no-brainer to moi (and hey, no comebacks on that one either  ;D  ;D  ;D )

Followup: KDE developers fixed it today so I ported the patch to KDE workspace 4.6.3 package.
